Overheating?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

30 secs isn't an exact figure but it won't take very long. The main problem with overheating it that everything expands into each other, certain alloys will melt, the water will boil, expanding into steam and warping cylinder heads, as soon as you warp the hear the oil and water come into contact, immulsifying and meaning you suddenly have no lubricunt in your engine causing excess wear and friction, which of course results in more overheating.

It all gets very messy very quickly and usually within about 5 second of initial overheating the engine is cooked, the main problem is its a runaway thing where what starts as a small problem quickly magnifyes where every result has a new effect.

Good explenation Tom.

May I add that the main reason of F1 car overheating while stationary is because there is no air being blown into the radiators therefore the water cannot be cooled. Compared to the normal road car, an F1 car doesn't have cooling fans and not to forget that idling of F1 car is 6000-7000rpm (road car idles at about 1000rpm - give or take depends on the car).
The trouble with the rat-race is that even if you win, you're still a rat.
