It's kind of ironic, in a way, that the car that heralded the nose design which would later become universal (hat tip to Postlethwaite but his was not quite there) was also the last winning team to let go of the manual gearbox.

He won Monaco, but the bumpy Detroit-track was the first "active" in my book, though I'm open to be corrected on that one?

Edit; Which I just was, Monaco was obviously the first as Lotus ran the system the entire season.

Just out of curiosity. Does anyone have a link to the story of why Lotus didn't stick to the system in the following years?

I don't know if this is the answer you're looking for, but I have read that shinkansen (Japanese bullet trains) use side skirts much like F1 cars of the ground effect era did.
