Traction Control Sound, 1993 vs now.

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Traction Control Sound, 1993 vs now.

Post

The "engine sounds" forum got me thinkiing about the Montreal GP 1993 (last year of TC, Active suspension, ABS etc) I remember walking into the track hearing the familiar scream of v10's, v12s and V8s but with an intermittant baritone "honking" sound whent the TC kicked in.
This year the sound was more a staccato misfire but a lot less pronounced than in '93.
My question is; what's different about the traction control in 1993 vs the last few years?

As much as I know early TC systems cut ignition in only one cylinder. Since that was bad for engine next TC systems worked in a way to cut ignition of all cyliners in circle (one after another). Third generation of TC doesn't cut the ignition at all but only reduces amount of injected fuel. That is what made Renault engines so reliable several years ago as they pioneered this system.

That particular one I've learned from a guy who knows Bernie's wife. Can't reveal more, sorry.

There was also the delayed spark, which also was used for soft rev limiting. Delayed spark was quite useful on turbo engines, as you could keep the boost up . Combining fuel reduction with delayed spark enabled you to control the EGT as well, as simply reducing fuel would sometimes send the EGT close to the exhaust port right off the chart, while only delaying the spark would sometimes send the turbo temperature sky high.

No, no... not directly. Knowing her gives him possibility get in touch with teams and engineers in a way common mortals can't, that's all.
