What is actually engine mapping? Can anyone explain this. I had heard about there is different engine mapping for every track. How they map the formula one car's engine?
They don't just map the engine operating parameters, they also have maps for the transmission, differential, etc. Anything that can be digitally controlled will need to be mapped.
The map is usually just a baseline setting. It is further modified by numerical formulas/algorithms that are programmed into the controller, the input variables being based on various sensor feedback.
The factory race teams like to justify their racing budgets by saying that racing helps to improve their production cars. But these days, the electronics and software codes are so sophisticated and expensive and time consuming to develop, it's usually the race teams that adopt production technology rather than the other way around.
