Inverted engines.

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

As usual on this forum people see an idea (in this case mine and probably others to) and shoot it down without even thinking about any possible benefits. How about instead of just being negative some people actually look at its merits. Having purely negative reactions to people's ideas intimidates new forums members and makes them probably not want to post their ideas, some of which might be very interesting.

There is no doubting that an inverted engine would take up less space. With regards to packaging, I actually think for a team like McLaren with that canted radiators, the radiators may be able to move inwards a bit because less space is taken up further up making the sidepods smaller.

Food for thought.

Terrible idea for an open regulation series. You actually need a narrow engine on the floor so that you can have full size ground effects tunnels.

Quite simply, an inverted V6 would be in the way.

An inverted F1 engine would not help much and has been tried long ago by many engine designers. The Subaru flat 12 engine was designed to provide a very low CofG, but it was a piece of crap performance-wise.

I thought we gave good reasons why it wouldn't be a great idea.

It's good talking point, lots of home built aircraft makers talk of inverting V8s to put in their Storch replicas.
The issue I reckon would be related to gyroscopic torque, or 'solidity in space', the motocycle guys are always moving the crankshaft up and down, forwards, backwards to find a sweet spot which gives a neutral resistance to movement.
A deep knowledge of physics may hold the answer.
