Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Mercedes engines sound bigger but they are definitely stronger in higher harmonics

The Honda engine to me sounded the best, closer to the scream we were once used to.

Most obvious on the onboards.
The Honda engine, for most of the year, sounded like it was totally untuned.

From F1Fanatic
The team’s car is based on the E23 it raced last year as Lotus, but with Renault power instead of Mercedes. “The RS16 is an evolution of our previous cars,” explained designer Nick Chester, “particularly our 2015 car, but incorporating the Renault power unit.” Renault said the power unit produces around 875bhp.

I assume that is all up with 160hp from the MGUK.

So around 715hp from the combustion engine. And they are 60-70hp down on Mercedes and Ferrari, according to some!

It seems they made some progress on ice side. According to http://motorsport.nextgen-auto.com/Rena ... 99772.html they will use upgraded spec from Brasil. It seems Brasil spec was really just an experiment.

Makes sense doesn't it? Mercedes stated their PU is more powerful than the old V10 engines.

First time they show those exhausts and mount a real V6 oil tank on the front of their show engine...
Obiously thats not the real thing. Looks like a 2014 engine (with test exhausts?) The intake plenum is definitely a 2014 spec.

need to give them ( ferrari, mercedes) a nobel price, as for french bashers (nobel of clown) , if they get around 800hp from ICE with in tank 100kg/h fuel, at best 45Mj/kg, it needs 45% energy efficiency . or realisticly with actual fuel 43Mj/kg 47%, wooahh , its a milestone in 21th century modern science

A while ago Andy Cowell stated that there was 1240kW available with the fuel flow rate, which works out at around 45MJ/kg.

I never believed those kind of numbers but hey, they're interesting because:
-Early in 2014, Renault estimated max Pu power at 750-760hp which equals 36% thermal efficency AFAIK
-at the end of the 2014 season, Abiteboul said the Renault gained 5% of effciency compard to Melbourne, which means their PU could develop 850hp maximum in Abu Dhabi?
-850hp is the number they wrote in the 2015 table you posted...

Or 5% of the 36%, seems more likely.

So 850hp is around 690hp from the ICE.
contradicts wazari's intel on all the engine powers.
For Sure!!
