I don't even want to think about the 2017 Tyres.....

As alonso said last night in an interview, if Mercedes is doing 150 laps it´s because they don´t need to test many parts, otoh McLaren have planned 110 laps as much because they also need some time in the box to assemble different parts wich need to be tested

Test seasons are exactly that, test seasons, this is not qualifying, timetable is completely useless here. He even said in this test they test some weird things like going out with crazy heights, or with left side of the car higher than right side to test aero perfomance, so imagine how useless are their laptimes
All the teams do the same work, they check new pieces, configurations, etc. BUT they take time to check also the pure speed though they obviously hide some potential. Experience says that a team with bad laptimes through all the test is having some problems. I dont say that they have to be fast every day but all the top teams make a good lap time or more importantly good lap times during stints, which show if the car have good pace. If McLaren show neither of them, fans should be worried. I dont say that its absolutely sure that they will suffer but It has never been a good sign if a team make no good lap times during the hole pre-season.
Agree to some extent, but programs are not the same. It´s very different a consolidated project wich only need some evolving (read, test some new parts ), than an almost new project wich need to be tested entirely, with an almost brand new PU witih tons of new pieces you need to test.

One can do some test laps and then concentrate on smaller details to refine the setup, wich is the point where they get some decent laptimes, while the other need to do test laps the whole session because they have to test more new parts so the process is a lot longer and don´t have enough time to concentrate on details, wich means they never get decent laptimes.

In other words, you can´t compare laptimes as you don´t know their programs, so you don´t know if they were testing someting or if that was an attempt for a fast lap. I agree you can get an idea about how evolved is each program wich usually gives an idea of perfomance, but that´s not a rule of thumb, there can be a lot of surprises once all of them are doing the same (racing).

Yeah I have been on there most of the time. But where do people get the laptimes from, as I see people posting drivers stints from time to time.
F1Today.net and AMus.. I have mentioned it in my post too when I posted Bottas stint on mediums.
Sorry, didn't notice that! Thanks for the info!

At some point during testing the teams have to turn everything up to full power, otherwise they wont know whether full power even works, let alone try to improve upon it for the first race.

Im sure if you are mercedes you will put slow tyres on and a chunk of fuel in the tank. But for the teams that have made more radical changes they will need to check balance etc of the car under qualy conditions.

There can be surprises, you´re right, but the amount and size of them are not so great. We cant do many things properly because we dont have enough information but this what we try to do on an forum like this one.

Things are complex and tricky but historically and statistically most of the times a car which sets good laps times(stints) is a good, a car which doesnt set them during the hole pre-season is not good. Very basic , yes, but this idea has worked most of the times.

Now I hope that McLaren will surprise us if they manage to check all the pieces and all together can work. McLaren is in this case a very special ...err case, may things to check but they have a problem, only 3 days more to do a gigantic amount of work.

Just 2.2 seconds slower than Merc then ..... was a 3.1 second gap in Barcelona quali last year.

Aaaaand again we've come back to the lowest common denominator. Pirelli. Incompetent as ever.

50 laps is a good amount for McLaren, I hope the red flag is related to a fuel test.
