Personally I'd prefer they just went the whole hog and did a jet fighter style canopy like this design below:

Well, aesthetically maybe, but the issue is the driver being able to get out. As you can see Kimi would still be able to stand up and get out of the halo.

I guess Ferrari is pouring all their 2017 efforts behind Kimi's car. That car will be the testing platform whole season.

They've probably been asked by the fia to try it out, to be fair

Ferrari was chosen because Kimi seems to be the most critical Driver when it comes to what the Drivers can see from the Cockpit.. So He was chosen to test it. At least that is what AMuS writes.

There would be plenty of solutions that could be employed with a full canopy design.

Probably as agreed with FIA, and I guess they can use the ''numbers'' on how it affects the aerodynamics on the car and most importantly drivers vision, but I'm sure this data will be shared among all teams.

Maybe. Also occurs to me that an errant tyre could still get through the hole too.

I'd want my helmet sponsorship money back.

No, the drivers eye line would be much lower.
If it is REALLY necessary and the drivers think it's ok, they probably should use it. Aesthetically it looks dreadful. It's also is much harder to see the drivers helmets, so they should make it mandatory to but the race number on top of the structure. I'm also guessing that teams have to work out a completely new concept for their aero.

My Qs:
1. Is that HALO can be quickly replaced if damaged during race?
2. Is't fixed or removable from the body cover?

Thread clean up required...or has 2016 testing finished already?

FIA has required Ferrari to check it.

It looks awful, really. And as I driver I wouldnt like to drive with this thing.
