I question all the gaps, because I believe all the teams have compromised their set-up in some way because of the weather (rain & temp).

Stop it, Hamilton just couldn't improve, Rosberg was behind him on track and the team wouldn't talk to him while he's on a flying lap.
Lewis was up by 0.175 after first sector and then he was suddenly down by 0.3xx, which means he made a mistake somewhere in the second sector to lose more than 4 tenths.
Source for those numbers? Because I think they are wrong.
They are incorrect. On his final fast lap Hamilton was up by 0.03s in 1st sector compared to his previous best. Not 0,175.

Ferrari was fast here last year as well.....the track suits them, i think Mercedes will still have an edge over them on "normal" tracks.

Despite multiple visits to my ophthalmologist in the last few years, he doesn't think so :) So, I would still prefer to wait and see the numbers .

He admitted that it was the worst lap he had here to get pole and he also mentioned that, his set up went bad from yesterday, but he still had couple of tenths.

If my memory serves right, Lewis was down by exactly 0.168 after sector 2.

True. I also understand that Canada is a track that improves quite a bit. There is no reason why they shouldnt have improved. To be fair, i think both Ricciardo and Vettel were on extraordinary laps...

Anyway, Canada is Canada (mechanical grip on slow corners and high top speed). I am fairly confident the gap between Mercedes to the rest is still substantial (0.3+) on the more traditional 'race tracks'...

All IMO of course.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

After being 0.033 up in S1.

Guys just stop ik already, Hamilton got pole anyway (deserved).

Rosberg was also very quick, especially in S2.
And Hamilton especially in S1.

Lets just say it is a shame Rosberg made a mistake, and Hamilton was unable to improve.

I also found the fight between Ricciardo an Verstappen interesting, Verstappen was strong, but what happend to Verstappens final Q3 run

They didn't have much on their sleeves, hence mistakes and failures to improve.

But i do agree that on more "technical" tracks Mercedes would be further down the road.
I'm actually surprised that Ferrari "clicked", after Q2 i was sure we would see the same failure of Barcelona and Monaco.

If we give Ferrari the same bigger leap of development, but keep a similar rate of development for Mercedes for this year, and throw in an overall delta of around -0.6s pace improvement for the ultra soft tyres over last year's super soft, here are my rough estimates for a dry qualifying:

Mercedes: 1:13.3 to 1:13.5
Ferrari: 1:13.5 to 1:13.7
Williams: 1:14.0 to 1:14.3
Red Bull: 1:14.0 to 1:14.3
Force India: 1:14.2 to 1:14.5
McLaren: 1:14.3 to 1:14.6
Torro Rosso: 1:14.5 to 1:14.8

Too lazy to work out for Renault, Sauber, Manor etc. I was being a bit generous to Red Bull and McLaren, as they actually got slower versus themselves from 2014 -> 2015, so I allowed them to close that gap, and have the same rate of improvement as Ferrari. Was being very generous to TR and also, this doesn't take in to account the recent trend of Ferrari dropping pace when Q3 comes. :P

I know I said a 1:13.6 for McLaren in the team thread, but that's using their average improvement across all tracks for this year. The above estimates are derived from Canada specific improvements from team to team.

It may be close between McLaren and Force India again for Q3 spots, but not knowing where Haas will figure, it may not be very close in the end.

As ever, I'll revisit after qualifying to see if I'm right!
Wow, only McLaren and Torro Rosso have stayed within the expected improvements! Fairplay to Red Bull for coming less than 0.2s of Ferrari, and fair play to Ferrari for not dropping pace in Q3. Clearly, RB can extract that one lap pace, but the race will be interesting, as their long runs were in the Williams territory.

- So what, perhaps the same can be said about Rosberg? Slower lap is sometimes just a slower lap, no need to drag track conditions etc. into it
- borefest if it's dry and nothing unexpected happens

So in the end who really underperformed today is Raikkonen
