rear wheel brake inlet

Post

Is there any particular reason why the rear of the side pod receeds behind the rear wheel? Other than brake cooling etc. is their any aerodynamic reasons for it or is it just a nescesary increase of drag.

So more air can go through there. This aids the diffuser in creating more downforce.

In terms of aerodynamics. If the side pod continued right up to the wheel (theoretically; disregarding things like brakes) would the drag be reduced/increased significantly?

on another note. what percentage of air reaching the diffuser reaches it this way?

No, the drag would be increased dramatically because than rear end wouldn't have coke bottle shape and you'd get massive turbulence/drag as the result of bulky rather than pointy rear end.

Same thing as when you compare sedan and hatchback version of some passenger car model. Hatchback generates much more drag than sedan.

sorry if this a repeat, but im new to this site and haven't had time to read every single post. but yes, essentially this is on the same topic.

Which would be more effective; the le mens style side pod (assuming that the bottle shape could be resolved behind the wheel rather than in front) or the f1 style where the bottle shape is in front of the wheel

(once again disregarding things like brakes)
