Will the 17' cars rev higher or be louder?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Lets hope it works. The current lawnmower sound is terrible :( :(

We still get these kinds of comments?

I watched in 2015 at Silverstone and believe me, the cars are still pretty damn loud, and the sounds are much more interesting than the drone of the V8, which I also watched in 2013 at Spa. #-o
No they aren't!! I watched the 2015 Australian GP and found the V8 supercar sound much better with the crackle and all. And it was proper loud and you could feel that sound and its vibrations while the F1 sounded dull like it had no soul, like a industrial machine just going on with the work. Not as loud as V8 supercar too.

I enjoyed the sound of those V8 supercars more than F1 and IMO F1 should sound like that. The race start of those V8 engined cars was in a different league compared to these turbocharged engines. Comparing the sounds of these two you would feel F1 is running with diesel engines.
Even turbo cars can sound wonderful ;)

Actually, I don't. F1 currently is quite unique with its hybrid racing. There are tons of race series out there with a "size matters" attitude. F1 would be nothing special anymore with another simple engine spec. It is absolutely stunning to know the current PUs have over 900bhp opposed to that V10 which only has 680bhp, at probably half the fuel flow.

I gladly take reduced engine noise as a sacrifice for that. In return you got a more variated noise palette where you can hear the turbo whistling, the tyres creaking and the brakes working.

The only thing I lament in this story is that the FOM did not do anything to explain this to the public. Instead they treated the fans like potato bags with no brains. A forced implementation of showing the energy harvesting and deployment cycles to the people would for instance go a long way. Microphones with reduced filtering will also help.

I hope Liberty Media see these obvious avenues.

I think I said back in '14 that your best "bang for buck" would be hiring a Hollywood sound engineer or three to reevaluate the trackside mics, etc. Still believe that.

Also there was a pic recently showing the onboard mic on one of the cars - it was on the sidepod's shoulder more or less, a crap place AFAIK. So yeah optimise and standardise that, too.

BMW's P83 produced 900-940bhp at 19000rpm and weighed less than 90kg...14 years ago.

I was referring to the specific Honda V10 in the picture, the RA109E.

And used twice the fuel.

In context, I'm pretty sure the image was posted more as "generic V10," not "RA109E"

14 years is a long time.

The point is that trying to somehow make like-for-like comparisons of hardware created across different eras will almost always lead to subjective differences of opinion, because different constraints tend to yield different designs. In any case, neither is more or less noble than the other.

Agree on this.

Having watched the cars at Spa they are definitely not shy, you can still hear them round the whole lap.

If you could buy a road car with a v6 turbo revving to 12.5krpm everyone would go mad over how amazing that was. A lot of the problem is in the recording and transmission.

V10?

Why not v12 then?

Also, who are "we"? I personally don´t want that, Turbo neither so, who are we? Do you represent someone apart from yourself?

The "we" who you condescendingly accused of wanting meter long horns attached to the exhaust pipes. You got that figured out already, so why asking?

This!

Since 1000bhp seems like the limit rulemakes have stablished, once it´s been reached development must take a different route. To me increasing efficiency is the obvious route to go, otherwise what would be PU manufacturers target? Reducing weight? They do it anycase.

About the hybrid part wich is the main responsible for the low noise (the mgu-h to me more precise), that´s debatable, but once you realize all engine manufacturers for production cars are developing electric and hybrid cars you notice that´s the future, like it or not.

If F1 was ignoring the future of engines/PUs/motors and keeping old technologies, it wouldn´t be F1 anymore, but some sort of vintage series. F1 has never been that, and I really hope it will never be, as there are several vintage series out there for that purpose. F1 must be modern, using latest technologies available. Otherwise we should stop calling it the pinnacle of motorsports
