what are packers

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Packers are composite spacers placed on the piston rod of the dampers. The packers are a last
ditch effort to keep the tub floor of the car from being damaged. When the suspension push rod
moves up with extreme force, compressing the spring and dampers to their maximum, the packer
stops the travel of the suspension by impacting the damper cylinder body and the bump rubbers.
Packers can be fixed but are sometimes free to move along the damper piston rods.

"What are packers?"

a) a derogatory term for men that find other men attractive.

b) the name of a football team from Green Bay, WI. (near the finest road course in the U.S.: Road America)

c) an elastomeric device placed above/below the metal coil spring of a coil-over dampener assembly. It provides a rapidly rising spring rate at the very end of suspension travel, as opposed to the virtually infinite rate rise one would achieve when the metal dampener body impacted the metal spring perch. The spring rate characteristics of this "bump rubber" or "packer" can be modified by altering the linear (annular)cross section of the compressible section, or by changing the durometer (hardness) of the packer's elastomeric compound.
