what is CVT?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

This should help.

It was a result of the collaboration with Van Doorne's Transmissie (VDT). As Scuderia_Russ said, following good testing results the CVT was banned by FIA.
Here a couple of further pics.

Remember not to get a Constant Velocity Transmission and Continously Variable Transmission confused. THey both use the acronym CVT.

Constant Velocity means that there is not inturruption for power from ground to wheels but there still are gear changes.

Continuously Variable 99% of the time means that there is one (1) gear that is constantly able to change it's ratio.

Well, the story of CVT in F1 is the story of DAF. They tested with Ferrari in 1979 and with Williams in 1993.

I think this could be applied to higher power applications.

I want my balls to do this as well.
