Damn I'm an idiot. If 24kg are the right weight then the back wheel tyre guys need to bulk up this winter. Maybe it also helps to have a counter weight on the back when changing the tyres.
Not bulking. To change the wheels fast you actually need to be flexible. Too much muscle mass and you will loose out. What they will need to do is more efficiency training and conditioning to the weight.

If they were 24kg you'd want to be bulking a bit, I have to change that weight/heavier wheel/tyre combos in a hurry between stages and you soon know about it :lol:

True, you need a some (emphasis on some) muscle mass to get it done stable and quick, but it a misconception that you need to bulk up to increase strength.

To put it in perspective:

Chris Froome (notice the 'bulked down' legs), 3 times winner of Tour de France.

Hafþór "the mountain" Júlíus Björnsson, probably 3 times accidental cycle crusher (under his weight).

An increase of 1.5 kg, or otherwise 6,67%, in weight is not that bad. You don't even need to be anywhere near an athlete to handle 24 kg. Rather, you are going to need increased stability training to accurately put the tyre on.

The biggest issue is ironically the increased volume of the tyre. A larger object is by default harder to get in the correct position, even if mass stays the same.

The biggest issue with the 24kg+ tyres is the size, yes. Mind, the other issue is your balance, as you tend to tip over when you push it on the hub compared to a single seater slick where they feel like you could balance it on a finger like a basketball :lol:

I sure hope Pirelli makes these rubber stronger than before. You don't want a rear blow out with these sized rear tires. There will be more than enough body damages when it happens.

Ok, so quick TLDR from what I got via google translate:

- Massa drove 20 aggressive laps on softs without too much problems
- time gap from medium to soft compound can be up to 2s for some cars, feels like a different car after switch
- tires heat up slower, but not too slowly, able to do 2-3 quali laps as result
- if tires do overheat, they're back to normal within a few corners
- pressures lowered to 22psi front, 18 rear (not sure what was used last year atm) with possible further reduction upon data evaluation by pirelli
- degradation from 20 laps on softs is around 1.5s (down from 4-5s last year)
- Tires now work in a wider temperature operating window (helps ferrari)
- less marbles overall
- a lot less pit stops predicted
- Pirelli say they brought tires as were requested (less degradation), but are willing to go back to more degrading tires in 2018 if requested so
- Massa says dirty air is more noticeable

The "too hard" tire should be made to be the best overall tire. If it say, had a delay of a few laps before coming up to temperature, and then being a fast and consistent tire, as opposed to the "too soft" tire, which should offer easy performance but degrade rapidly. In other words each compound should correspond with a set number of pit stops, Hard means 1 stop or half race distance, medium means 2 stops, or 1/3rd race distance, soft means 3 stops or 1/4th race distance and so forth.

I don't like the asymmetric idea, but totally free tire choice would be great. The only problem is logistics - Pirelli needs the team tire requests so far in advance the teams couldn't really react to weather forecasts or recent car developments... which in my opinion takes away from the idea.
