I really hope Liberty realise that they need Silverstone.

Taking the British Grand Prix to a street circuit in central London would just cement that paying a lot of money is more important to F1 than actually having a good quality circuit. We're slowly but surely losing all the beautiful purpose built high speed racing circuits, and having them replaced with street circuits with nothing but straights and 90° bends. They're boring to look at, boring to race on, and boring to watch.

Liberty have bought themselves a problem. If they agree reduced fees with Silverstone, every other track will want a reduction too. Liberty aren't going to want to go down that road so they might just sacrifice Silverstone in order to make a point.
I disagree, from a purely commercial standpoint you can argue the merits of sacrificing a GP to avoid reducing the rates for others, but the fact is Silverstone is just too important symbolically.

The site of the first race, the home of not just the majority of teams and their employees but also the vast majority of F1 staff, including the majority of "traveling marshalls", and the best attended race every year, holding the record for spectators (and home of one of the largest TV audiences). Plus a bloody good race track that's actually exciting to drive and to watch.

If you're the owner of another barely attended Tike-drome who has only been in the sport a few years there's no way you can reasonably expect to sit down and negotiate your own fee reduction based on Silverstone getting a better deal.

Liberty will (or at least should) take a hit to have their TV screens filled with an historic venue packed with cheering fans, with advertisers knowing they're reaching a big domestic audience. They wouldn't for a track with empty stadiums, zero racing heritage and a tiny domestic fanbase.

Sadly, Silverstone will be in a non-European country soon.

The UK will still be part of Europe, just not in the EU. So it'll geographically be a European race if not a politically European one. :?

I would be happy with Silverstone/brands/(oulton?) and a London gp in the same season, why not? The teams are more or less home, we've had Imola and Monza on the calendar before.. Split the cost have two for the price of one and a half why not?

Even without the brainwave above, if there is one gp which is efficient cost wise, it's this one. Also, F1 has a lot to lose if the UK drops out, so smart move from the brdc now that Bernie's gone

Why do so many people think the UK is leaving Europe ?? It will never leave Europe. Like Japan can never leave Asia or Brazil leave South America.

It would mean the UK joined Europe in 1973!

BRDC is using atual contract, signed with Bernie, to get a better contract with Liberty Media. I don't believe that Liberty Media will lost British GP, LM will reduce BRDC fee.

It's all posturing to get a better deal from Liberty. How can you have the second highest attendance on the calendar and barely break even? (Obvious Bernies fees are extravagant) So of course they have to make them know that hey we won't pay that sort of money again.

Liberty will not sacrifice the British Grand Prix "to make a point"

instantly they'd lose all credibility with the teams and more importantly the fans. 8 out of 10 teams are based in the country where Formula 1 hosted its first world championship race. That in itself is worth keeping the GP for

So what if the other circuits want reduced fees, i'm quite confident in saying let them take a running jump. Godawful circuits like Yas Marina and Bahrain could quite easily be replaced by races in Europe or the US where they'll pack out the grandstands and F1 would be better for it. Liberty arent mugs.
Although they go about it in a nicer way than Ecclestone, Liberty's number one objective is still maximising profits.
They could go for a couple of years without Silverstone race if the compromise required is too great(as people said this isn't as much about Silverstone as it is opening precedents), maybe with a London GP in it's place, maybe no British GP for a couple of years, you'll still watch the races and the teams ultimately won't care.

Re: Future Of The British Grand Prix

Of course there will be a British Grand Prix. Almost all of F1 is based in the UK. Almost the entire technology is based in the UK. Having said that, British GP there will be. However, it might not be good old Silverstone.

Bare in mind, Monza is under threat as well. However, F1 can't do without the Italian Grand Prix.

Also, in 20 years time when the cars will go 500 kph, it's possible that all of the tracks will be gone as they might not be suitable for that format of racing.

20 years ago they must have been doing 100kph ???

I agree on the British Grand Prix though

Stormy's comments to date seem short on logic. Perhaps i should start to downvote the idiotic ones. Your choice, stormy. Oh, bear, not bare.
