Trulli told Toyota to pick him up this year.

I can just imagine what he could be doing in this years Toyo instead of the Renault. I think he will go where there is more money for development, but then again, maybe the 2009 regs (which every team is currently beyond the restricted maximums), the Renault will be a top 3 contender...

Odds anyone?

I don' see the similarity quite so strong. Villeneuve was very loyal to his mentor Pollock who simply wasn't up to the job to lead BAR. This was immediately clear when Richards was making progress where Pollock had failed for years.

Alonso has always been connected to the Spanish press to a degree that questioned his loyalty to his team. In his fights with Michael Schumacher and Ferrari he criticised his own team. that was shocking and unusual in comparison.

then he pulled that stunt at McLaren in Hungary and I thought OMIGOD!!

Montezemolo and Theissen must have had simillar thoughts. they will not touch Alonso unless they have a perfect #2 driver.

at BMW they are long time committed to Kubica and Heidfeld/Vettel. Ferrari is settling into an era with Kimi and Massa as his sidekick.

Alonso must make up his mind where his future will be. that must happen in the next three months. what he needs most of all is building a relationship with the team he wants him to support to the WDC next.

In my oppinion, he'll stay at Renault. Toyota is too big a chance, and let's not forget last year's car was not exactly good. Furthermore, the new regs will have a big influence. Renault has produced cars with decent aero recently: R23 lacked power, R25 and R26 won. The bad cars were not that bad. Last year's car suffered from Bridgestones and the R24 had too much weigh on the back. Still, they were top 4.

There is the additional point of Pat Symonds being a very important part of the TWG, a point that might have significance... especially since renault's cars didn't have all those horns and fins and stuff until basically this year.

Although Williams (the team I support, BTW) is making nice progress, it is still below where it belongs, and the british press is slightly hyping their results. Let's be frank, 2005's FW27 was probably better, and 2004's was better at the beginning and the end of the season.

Finally as an Alonso supporter, I must say I'm extremely disappointed. Not with his driving, which is as good as ever, but with his interviews. It is a mix between journalists asking meaty questions, Alonso's mouth and it seems a lack of control from his manager. I mean, he was so quiet during the winter, and his driving in Australia and Malaysia was great, but then why oh why do you have to throw stones at your home, Fernando? I understand that foreign press might want to take every ounce they can, but some people, especially Antonio Lobato should be more careful with what they ask. If Alonso says something like "I'm waisting my time here, these engineers are worthless" it will be game over. Not only for him, but also for the F1 journalists in spain and the TV that just bought the rights from 2009 on*.

The next Villeneuve? I hope not. Thanks for reading such a long post,

Miguel

I am not amazed by F1 cars in Monaco. I want to see them driving in the A8 highway: Variable radius corners, negative banking, and extreme narrowings that Tilke has never dreamed off. Oh, yes, and "beautiful" weather tops it all.

There is a difference: Villeneuve reached in a Williams, (in a top moment, with a top car) took advantage of what was there and developed none.

If Alonso stays at Renault, next year we will know if he can point the team in the right direction, the way Shoemaker did with Benetton first and Ferrari later. The way himself did with Renault before.

Alonso has an untamed persona, hence why the McDrone ambiance did not work out so well for him and the team. The Mclaren management did not allow him to be himself, while at Renault he has always had the freedom to be himself and feel unrestrained.

And I agree with my friend Belatti, if Alonso continues with Renault for 2009 he will prove to himself and everyone who doubted him whether he has the capabilties to be a leader and help improve a faltering team.

how did you develop that info to the proof of concept stage?

I agree that the most sensible course for Alonso is to stay with Renault until they hopefully get back to top team status or have prooved incompetent. So all he needs to do is say no comment.
