Ferrari F1 2018 car Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

TJ13 had to take down that report as it was so obviously an old rendition of a year or two ago.
The thumb nose is designed for a purpose, to comply with measurements and also to allow maximum airflow. Unless measurement rules are altered, than the thumb is the current best solution.
You say that, but there’s obviously *a* philosophy that values a more ‘normal’, thinner nose over the thumb; it’s not just Mercedes who, although the most successful team could be argued to have different drag/df concerns due to more powerful PU, but Toro Rosso following this route validates that there is a school of thought where this can work.

Not disagreeing that the thumb nose seems to be optimal, but don’t think it’s quite that clear cut.

Good point. Also it's interesting that Ferrari hired a development pilot from toro rosso, which has a very similar front suspension and nose with Mercedes.

There were also rumours beginning of last year that the Ferrari lacked in front DF. I wonder if they will adopt the thinner nose and try to put that cape/diffuser behind it like Merc:

The Mercedes nose cape is more about the airflow under the car, it's not producing front end downforce. Indeed, it might actually create lift or, at best, be lift neutral. It's basically a huge vortex generator and director. The Mercedes struggled with rear tyre consistency early on and this likely helps the rear end perform better.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

If Ferrari were to adopt high front suspension arms, it would ruin their aerodynamic concept. That's why last year's front suspension arms were lower than in season 2016.
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Great picture (the 1st) ! At first glance the rest of the cars look really alike too but then you see past the nose and suspension and realize they aren't similar at all. Really nicely put together!

As I saw, SF no longer uses their Marlboro-inspired logo and lost a Santander sponsorship... So, completely new livery?

"Marca" other than the suspension argument is reporting that:

1- Ferrari has intention to retain his advantage over Mercedes in terms of "agility" so it is unclear if the wheelbase increase would be the rumored 6 cm. or too minimal to make a difference in terms of body downforce generation.

2- Ferrari "central wing" (Sidepods) will be heavily modified, with slimmer and higher-placed air intakes ( :o ), and longer(in height) airflow conditioners (even if placed lower in the car)

here is the link to the article, hope for my translation to be accurate [-o< :P

Replace "central wing" with "sidepods", and you're there

It should be accelerating flow under it, cleaning up turbulence, and increasing DF a little. It's also directing flow towards the components aft. It was a fix to the front end instability Mercedes had early in the season.

Some more rumors from italian italian newspaper:

http://autosprint.corrieredellosport.it ... _che_verr/

short translation:
About PU: fixes for TC 2017 reliability issues. Efficiency gains by modifying turbine and software. ERS radiator will be bigger and moved a little ahead

Sidepods changes: air intake should be bigger and moved a bit down, to reduce drag. There will be changes in flow conditioners in front of air intake.

Wheelbase should be longer than 2017 car.

I understood it as - front will be even thinner and wider, and downward opening (top opening) will be bigger to reduce drag even more...
And they call it a stall. A STALL!
