McLaren MCL33

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Its a turbo failure according to AMuS. Since the Renault engine's turbo is at the back of the engine, (in the region of where the burn marks are?), could this be related to their overheating issues?
On lap 5 for the day? Doubt it

They did 151 laps with the same PU yesterday I believe, maybe that amount of running thermally degraded it to the point where it failed after 5 laps today. They're running a compromised, "quick fix", duct and vents on the engine cover. Maybe they don't provide enough/sufficient cooling? I don't know, I'm just throwing out suggestions for the possible causes.

They have a new package scheduled for Australia which should deal with the cooling issues. We should wait until after the first couple of races before we draw conclusions about their cooling issues.

couple of races!? this is not another test year.. this is the year they need to make it ... or become the new williams...

they dont have a couple of races...

they can get the cooling right.. but the lack of laps in testing. snowballs the rest.. they are in deep waters now.

You've completely misinterpreted my point. My point about waiting a couple of races is that we won't know whether they've completely solved their cooling issues until after a couple of races. For example, they might run reliably in Australia and then have a nightmare in Bahrain. Hence, we should wait until after a couple of races.

Do you have to use a PU for 7 races in a row ??

I thought they have 3 PU's for the season and can use any one of them at anytime. It's only once you pass the allotted 3 that penalties is applied.

Updates to the PU's will also be a factor.

they have to target to use it for 7. so if your using your other Pu´s, come update time, you take a penalty instead of just an engine change ( with the updates ) ...

i also have a hard time understanding how not running a medium tire or harder during testing to have the data is going to help..
they have so much they are missing.

So are those parallel burn lines in front of the "14" the turbo housing at the back of the engine ?

those burn marks are reminiscent of the early mercs pre 2014.

It's their first year on the hybrid era that have the turbo at the back, next to the gearbox. Its something new for them.
Obviously they miscalculated something on the cooling and they have overheating issues at that area. The whole overheating thing probably affected the turbos life span so it failed.
IMO all these are 100% consequences of the engine architecture change.
Hopefully they will learn from it they will make modifications and they will sort it out until AUS.
Maybe they will fix it internally or maybe they will split and slightly increase the roll hoop inlet.
