If only they could have raced in this configuration
According to the poeople that are downtalking Aston Martin Valkyrie in the other thread, this is impossible, because an LMP1 car can't do F1 track times.

Amazing machine..

834 kg about ~1200 HP sideskirts, active aero on the front diffuser, drs on a huge rearwing, and special Michelin tires...

Damn, they will set records all over the world... 👍
Not bad guys

Exactly. When (in F1) you can barely beat 15 years old lap times, there is nothing really pinnacle anymore. Efficiency is 1 thing, outright performance is another. But good job Porsche, must have been insane to drive.

Pretty cool they did this, but im courious as to why?
Simply PR value? Or a hint to FIA/ACO that if the regulations allowed cars like this, they would still be interested in the WEC?

Technically, it's not an LMP1 car as it doesn't meet the rules governing them. It's a one off prototype with everything they can throw at it. It's a wonderful thing, but an LMP1 car it is not.

Likewise, the AMV is a bit of a con because it won't be the "road car capable of beating an F1 car" that they originally claimed - the track car is, like this not-LMP1 car, very different to the one built to regulations. If the AMV track special isn't as fast as an F1 car then there is something wrong, really.

Ferrari and Mercedes could both do this - build a car that shatters lap records without meeting any regulations. Hell, anyone could, really, because the skill in racing is to get the most performance within the rules. No doubt if Mercedes adjusted their current engine to use as much fuel as it could and the ERS was tweaked to its maximum, and they added downforce how they saw fit, they'd make the Porsche's time look "so last week".
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

I just discovered this thread - I did some simple analysis how Porsche managed to beat F1 record laptime

How Porsche developed their F1 beating monster 919 Hybrid Evo

Thanks. Wasn't aware LMP1 produced more downforce than F1. How do the tires fare? Do they tend to pit more frequently? Do you know how their respective compounds compare?

The 12 second delta well illustrates the effects of regulations. Regarding weight, I found this in another article:
Tires in P1 according to Webber and Lotterer were/are vastly superior to Pirelli's modern tires. Audi and Peugeot used to triple and quadruple stint their tires overnight at LM, the cars now have to double stint at least one set per 6h race. Compounds are less volatile and don't drop off after a few hot laps, the drivers all claim they can push clear to the end of the stint. Pit stops at LM now tend to be every 16 laps, can't figure out the mileage that is right now. Michelin have slick intermediates now and are allegedly working on an all weather tire that works optimally in both the dry and wet so they can use s single compound for the entire race regardless of conditions.

Probably a statement to FIA as to what relaxed rules can produce...

Great analysis.

As for the other posts comparing it to the F1 cars, it makes absolutely no sense.
Just put some stickier tires on the Merc and it can beat this lap time with no other mods...But what would be the point?

No need to put skirts or anything, Just allow opening DRS at will, as it worked on EVO lap, and gain a solid second without changing ANYTHING on the car.

Nope, it's a message to the world, that we don't need the FIA...

I don't see why we don't need. This was just to show what Porsche Could have made with no rules, and for a single lap. Could this car win the 24H of Le Mans? I doubt it. It doesn't even have whippers. Or ar con.
