Damage on Alonsos diffuser, slightly different lighting than the pictures above

I often wonder if the aerodynamicists learn something from situations like these. In Austria? I think Max took small floor damage and claimed the car was undrivable - but the McLaren takes off half its diffuser and Alonso finishes P7.

The effect could have been track specific, Baku is quite unique, but interesting nonetheless.

You have to say, it would have been Pos 10,11 or worse if all cars in front finished (which is not unusual in current F1).

It's most definitely tracks specific. Baku is all about mechanical grip and grunt, whereas Austria demands good downforce.

Yes, I think we already knew that.
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

But if we're playing what-ifs then you have to allow for Alonso not getting crashed into at the start. I think P7 would still have been possible in a normal race judging by his pace in a wounded car!!

But that was not the point. In what way do you not play with what-ifs?

Is say that P7 is not indication for anything. It was no "normal" race.

You said that they would have been P10 or 11 if all the cars in front finished. But they didn't. That is a fact.

You're hypothesising based on "what if" all the cars finished (ie: a normal race).

So if you're assuming that cars in front didn't crash into each other, then we have to also allow for Alonso not getting crashed into.

And if the cars in front didn't crash and Alonso still managed to come back to P10 with all the damage he had to his car, then I would still say that's not a bad thing. Many drivers would have retired that car!!

I find weird how a "normal" Mclaren with Vandoorne, struggling with the tyres more then a damaged Mclaren with Alonso.
Maybe they should damage the car every race.

I was thinking along those lines. Either aero is way over estimated, or Mclaren's is not so good anyway.
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.
