Exotic materials

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Exotic materials

Post

Hi!
I recently had a discussion with a friend, who told me F1 stables were banned from using certain exotic materials in their cars. Is this true? What are these materials and why aren't stables allowed to use them?

Beryllium is the leader here
pistons from material with a high Be content were used in the NA engines - now this is banned

searching on this site should find plenty of posts
and the FIA rules

Like Tommy Cookers said, Berilium is the primary material not allowed to be used.

I believe the reason why was because Berilium is considered toxic, and also to keep costs in check.
