McLaren MCL33

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

McLaren testing a new t-wing over the rear wing. Very interesting!

I am almost sure its just a lip that the back cover is sitting on (see the silver "wall" on the back).
You guys took this one too far :-D

That looks like they're having problems linking the upwash of the wing to the centre of the diffuser
How does that work?

It's the only reason I could see why you'd slap a piece that crude on for testing - you're not concerned with what it does to the wing, you're wanting to see if it drives the diffuser like you were expecting or whether the trouble lies elsewhere.

Which part are we talking about? That orange? Thats the one that attach the grey rear cover behind the rearwing, the bat cape, has nothing to do with rearwing tests

The bat cape is up front, under the nose - do you mean the gurney type flaps on the engine cover? If so they're a completely different shape.

He means the orange flap over the Rear Wing, It isn't for testing. It just holds the silver cover behind the car, every team has one.

It was this i reacted to, which part is referred to?, if its the orange part on top of the rearwing upper element then thats just the part that hold the shiny grey cape covering the rear if you look beneath the rearwing

It's just the cover for the exhaust when they start up the car, so the mechanic doesn't get a face full of exhaust gas. You can see the reflective surface under the rear wing.

Could well be, I was just going on someone saying it was a part they were running and then took off.

The curved, anhedral T-wing (painted flat black), is that new?

Was talking to some lads who were in the paddock today, and it sounds like they know where some of the problem is now, but they don't sound confident of having parts out in time to fix it at Hockenheim, just a few smaller bits and setup changes.
They also said (contrary to what Renault did...so I don't know who to believe) that the new MGU-K does have an advantage in the new qualy mode over the one they're running.

Maybe that's just an small inertia thing rather than horsepower if it's lighter :?:

Is it relevant?
If possible the car would run at the minimum limit. It would just be a matter of swapping ballast for benefit
