A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Wow, 3 cam desmo on a Norton?!? I had no idea they went there... Fancy race solution or was this a production item?
Edit: The unit shown was a proto and the article I saw said it never raced... Cool though. Good link here for more info: https://www.desmodromology.nl/norton-500-single/

Since we are getting our desmo on, I submit the 1989 Ferrari 034/5 3.5L V12 F1 mill. 13,000rpm and 660hp. And desmo, at least in proto form. I'm having a hard time nailing down what's what...

5 valve per cylinder all the way to their vee twelve engines. notice how narrow the cam lobes are with that desmo, goes to show how little load is needed to open valve if there was no valve spring. since the combination of both opening and closing would come to the same width as a normal sprung valve, this would might mean it doesnt take much to open and close at those rp/m. however, being ferrari, maybe the lobes are narrow simply from them using some sort of high strength material to achieve that

whats also is interesting is if the returning rocker arm is not made to stop the valve lift any further or its lift dead center. this would relieve a lot of energy away from the rocket and stress is only to close the valve

Does that thing have some kind of CVT? The last chassis dyno graph looked like a constant power curve. I don't speak French so maybe it was constant tractive effort which would make it a slipper/centrifugal clutch not a CVT.

Great observations Powerslide.

Here's the current Ducati "desmosedici" system on their top of the line V4 (Below). Looks pretty narrow too. On the F1 motor I never know if it's a 'quali' motor that gets binned after three laps or what (How long ago were spare chassis and quali engines?). Also the 5 valves were tiny. If you look at the single-cylinder Toyota test engine the valve gear looks much beefier...

I wish there was a general engine topic where we could interchange our knowledge about engines.
Does any knows how engine load is calculated base on data from TPS، map and engine crank rev sensor? I want the equation which ECU use to calculate load?
Another question is that how automatic gearbox calculate road load?Does it use map sensor numbers or it uses the data of speed, road slope and car weight to find load? what about weight of passengers?
There is no Might or Power except with Allah.

Why are there so few F1 engine bay pictures available post 2006?

F1 car width now 2.0m (same as 1993-1997). Lets go crazy and bring the 2.2m cars back (<1992).

Is that some sort of battery with a gas generator on top? Anymore information about it?

Clearly not been running as the engineering has a bare hand on the exhaust.

And surely the range is dependent on the size of the fuel tank?

Wow. Flat-10. Mechanical fuel injection. Supercharged? Exhaust pipe on the diff? Weighs as much as a "Honda!". What is it???

PS, Love the DHL box as HVAC nfix in the background. Good to know Porsche stoops to my level sometimes.

PPS, Is that a 'birdcage' Maserati just peaking out on the right?
