Do McLaren have a unique gearbox, or is their gearbox used by other teams as well? Seems like a lot of their retirements were due to a failure of the gearbox

McLaren use their own bespoke unit.

Possibly down to the limited time they had to adapt it to the Renault PU.
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Wouldn’t say so, they’ve had gearbox-related issues for the past few years now.

Most of the previous failures were put down to vibration issues with the Honda motor and what the K + H were doing during shifts, however. And Honda themselves took some of the rap for that so it wasn't just Mclaren excuses.

I'm pretty sure they said the gearbox was originally designed for the Honda engine, and retrofitted to the Renault PU. There's bound to be compromises and weaknesses from that.

Alonso went the first 7 races without an issue.

If Alonso retires on the 2nd to last lap when he's out of the points and they say "gear box" I would take that with a grain of salt. Not sure why Vandoorne has been played by them so much.

Absolutely agree with this. Am I correct in saying that if you retire from Race A before the chequered flag because of a gearbox issue and replace it before Race B there is no penalty whereas simply replacing a functional gearbox between two race weekends would incur a penalty due to the box not completing the allocated minimum race weekends? I remember Jenson parking up less than 100 yards before the finish line and giving up points for finishing in 6-7th place for this reason once.

oh, you're right and in was the 6th race. I think they need they could change on the 7th race. So I messed up the numbers. At any rate, they shouldn't be having gearbox problems.

From Hungary tests day 1. Bargeboard view. Shows the distinct mcl33 mid-wing quite clearly.
