I've suggested this before, mere speculation and opinion, but I just believe the 2017 rules overhaul, higher downforce cars don't suit his driving style. There were reports last year of him needing to change his driving style for F1, this was mentioned last year. Stoffel appears to be a relatively late starter to Motorsport, maybe it's harder to adapt and worse for him, harder to adapt to a flawed car.
Stoffel ran in superformula, which had more downforce than the 16 cars. He also won a few races and had some less than stellar races in SF. I dont know why he's not been performing, but i hope he has success in another series.

My friend runs a simshop in Tokyo, and Stoffel and other pro drivers from various series were regulars at including button, nakajima, lotterer etc . He's not as bad as everyone seems to make it seem like.

I hoping for chaos , not rain but snow...maybe Alonso can win it!
If it snows, then it's more likely a Finn would win... Kimi or Valtteri? take your pick.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Blah blah blah. Follow the pied piper till he stops playing.
They screwed up tyre allocation so had to run slower primes but lets find an excuse anyways for the ballsup. If they were running 2019 wings then it would be more believable. What 2019 elements have they been testing?

I’m guessing they’re still trying to understand where they went wrong on this car, so that they don’t make the Same mistakes next year. Maybe they will try out 2019 parts in Abu Dhabi test.

Since you left the team things have fallen apart. They forgot to order tyres in Japan, they will forget tools for USA.

They have been tools throughout this season. It would be hard to forget tools in Austin.

So they've literally written off 2018 (focusing on 2019) that they forgot to order the tires

After almost 4 years into this formula, Mclaren and Alonso admit that the car aero is not efficient enough. One wonders how the aero guru PeterP still has his job. Been saying this over last two years, the guy is overrated. Expect some friction between James amd Peter who still has lot of authority.

team said they're focusing on 2019 car, surely there must be some carry over from this year, unless next years car is radically different.

From the performance of this year's car, it wouldn't surprise me if there's nothing worth carrying over, especially underneath the skin... even the drivers aren't being carried over.

This whole year just proves that last year's chassis was quite decent. They should have just brought last year's car and welded a halo onto it. Would have been good for 7th even this year

That is so far from the reality in fact it proves they have had a bad inefficient aero throughout this formula and used excuses until they realised the root cause.
This year's aero, from the front wing to the body, to rear is an evolution of last year. Only thing new was the rear suspension which people were raving about early. They still have the smallest intake but one of the widest sidepods as they house all cooling packages there. Nose has been updated to reduce drag but fundamentally it is not efficient. The irony is that they still had higher downforce packages that they wanted to try last year and bring into this year but could not. No wonder they are struggling because they cant reduce the baseline drag.

Not necessarely. Concentrating on next year could also mean that they are trying to fix correlation issues. That does not necessarely mean running next years parts, but understanding current.

What I do not understand is that they are not running the C-spec engine. Yes it would provide an integration challenge and eat up some resources. But they could be doing themselves a favor for next year by helping Renault to debug the engine.
