What is this mystery Formula car?

Post

So, Renault brought this formula car at an exhibition and they're advertising everywhere that it is the 2018 F1 Renault R.S.18. Well obviously, it's not. But which car is this? I can't recognize which year it is and I'm starting to doubt that it's even an F1 spec but more likely a lower category. (just look at the frong wing  )

I think it’s a modified version of the Renault R29 (2009 car). Yep, some front wings were that basic back then

Imho is a Lotus 2011/12 (for the small rear spoiler) but with a fake front spoiler, maybe similar to those of the 2019 regulation.

I think you're right, looks like the Lotus R31 showcar.

But the nose is really strange: that Lotus had an high nose with a step in it, if i remember well.

Probably they use this nose for the exhibitions.

Actually I think it may be even older. The nose looks a lot like the nose used on the r27 showcar.

Nose cone and engine cover looks like the one on the R27. Front wing is from the R29 without the cascades as are the sidepods (from a later version of the R29). Tbh, it looks to me like a mix of different parts from different cars all just bolted onto a pre-2010 chassis :D.

I wish the low noses of the current F1 cars looked that good!

Historical accuracy really doesn't seem to be a priority with these show cars! :D It would almost be better if they just put an iconic Renault R25 or R26 on display, but I guess the modern day sponsors would not be pleased...

The chassis is definitely an R27 chassis... How you can tell that? its the shape of the sidepods, the airbox intake, the fact it has low cockpit side protections (the raised side protections came in 2008, so this is not an R28; the R28 had similar sidepods and airbox) and the best giveway is the presence of a V keel under the nose.
So it's the R27 with a 2009ised bodywork.

Its a R25 chassis, chassis 03 I'm led to believe. Its been doing the rounds since 2008 when ING had it in their HQ in the Netherlands for a year, then it went back to Einstone and was placed in its wind tunnel and museum tour, and had been repainted in Lotus colours forever till now. It has seen a couple Autosport shows as well. R25 had a V keel and the R27 was their first zero keel chassis.

Hope that answers your questions.

That can be. I have seen a r25 on display at a bourse in 2007. But I am pretty sure that back then it still had the R25 “Uma Thurman” type nose.

All they do is fabricate a new nose, they often do this and many other areas of the car to make them look current, like front and rear wings and engine cover.

i've always thought the R27, especially with that bulky nose, looked extremely heavy. i know it's just by looks,
but it looks slow and heavy.

never ever noticed that little 'monkey-seat' shaped 'wing' fused with the intake of the airbox on top before though!

Bold parts are wrong. The rest is right or possible.

R27 had a V keel https://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/jpg/2 ... -r27-2.jpg
And this can't be an R25; look at the sidepods and, more importantly, the airbox. This monocoque has a unique/signature r27 or r28 airbox intake BUT since it has low sidepod protections, it can only be an r27 chassis.
It was repainted and displayed in 2015 and 2016 too.
