Is this much different than what Bahrain was boycotted for a few years ago? Seems rather shocking to me...

Well, the Bahraini protests were to do with human rights in general in the country. The Rio thing appears to be about dealing with armed drug gangs who use the people as human shields and also prey on those same people. So, no, not really the same thing.

However, the use of kill squads acting as judge, jury and executioner based on "he looked like a bad 'un, honest" is somewhat troubling. Maybe it'll clean up the favelas and make life better, but maybe it's the first step to wiping out the favelas. "Everyone looks like a drug dealer so shoot them all"...
