Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Exhausts look fake (no race exhausts) but turbo might be the real one. Twin entry turbine

Aren’t all four power units turbocharger turbine scroll twin entry?. or better put, which of the four power units uses a single entry turbocharger turbine scroll?.

990hp (2018) + 60hp (winter) = 1050hp
since when did Renault have 990hp in 2018. Try 950hp for 2018 because if Renault had 990hp then a Red Bull Driver would have been world champions in 2018.

Compared to last year sounds you can tell the injection pattern and TJI is much different.

It certainly sounds quite different, much more gutteral!

TJI? is it possible for them to be using 'TJI' upside down and so sounding so muck different?.

Would you like to speak more about this? I'm very curious!

I would think at that kind of low speed and load you're more likely to be hearing valvetrain/harmonic changes than combustion. The change in noise could be as simple as new exhaust manifolds and cam changes to suit.

microphone location too can have an effect, as can reflections

Could also be a different firing order and completely different manifold and turbo. The higher pitch indicate that they have managed to even out the pulses even though those engines has uneven firing order. That is important to do to make the turbine more effective. They have got some people both from Ferrari and Mercedes. .. Not few went from Renault to Mercedes and perhaps they are coming back...

Interesting Renault are not the first ones to have first fire  (on a Renault PU). Unless of course I missed it somewhere...

when Renault last had a 90 deg V6 with a single turbo they used a longer runner length on one bank than on the other bank
so afaik (at design rpm) left bank exhaust pulses arrived at the turbo exactly out of phase with right bank exhaust pulses
ie 6 evenly-spaced exhaust pulses per cycle to the turbo
this would require exhaust path lengths of about 20 cm difference between left bank and right bank

a twin-turbo V6 has 3 evenly-spaced exhaust pulses
emulating this spacing would require in the current cars about 60 cm difference in exhaust path lengths

where exhaust pipes merge just upstream of the turbo there is presumably also a central divider

It was always twin scroll. You may have seen a single flange turbine, but it still has two entries in it. It would be very foolish to use a single entry turbine for a six cylinder engine.

I'd be super surprised if Renault doesn't have teething problems with their new engine architecture. We'll soon see how much know-how Marcin Budowski took with him. He claims what he knows is of no value or already banned, but when only your power steering is the same, you know something is up. He should have been on leave until the next Formula change. In any case, any progress from this team will be looked at with raised eyebrows and skeptisim.
