McLaren MCL34 speculation thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

What makes it off for me is the general lack of enthusiasm of the people present, half of them are looking like they dont know why are they there.

I am not surprised that results are not achieved if morale is so low.
Whooping, hollering and high fiving is what USians do. Brits applaud politely and hope that they haven't messed something up somewhere.
Beat me to it! An approving nod, a polite ripple of applause and the odd congratulatory handshake is plenty enough self-admiration for us, thank you very much!

In terms of the “first fire-up” in the video - does this mean that it’s the first time the 2019 Renault engine will have run in-situ (not on a dyno) in any form or just that it’s the first fire-up in the back of the 2019 McLaren? Encouraging to see McLaren so far ahead of the competition if it’s the former, makes a change from the frantic starts to seasons we’ve seen in recent years where they’ve just been chasing their own tails for the first two weeks of testing.

Yup. They're getting the complete car ready. Probably the first time they're on-schedule in the last few years. Waiting for a shakedown now.

Well, considering it's a renault engine, it was probably done already halfway past season! Upgrades to get it on par with other engines will probably follow "early" in the season.

Any idea if shakedown is gonna happen before test, and where/when

Of course before the test, that's the whole point. Likely Silverstone.

Another sneak peek. Tea-tray I think.

If I'm not mistaken, it's the tea-tray.

Could be the cooling exit/engine cover.

That thought did occur to me, but the surface area is too large for it to be the area ahead of the diffuser. Also the vertical support struts are very reminiscent of those on tea-trays, especially in current spec cars.

How about an inside of a cockpit perhaps? That cilinder being the stearing column?

No way it's the cockpit. The thing is probably a flashlight or something of that sort.

Well, im sure it aint the T-tray either. It must be from internal structure somewhere. The only thing that pops into my mind is somewhere in the middle - space for a fuel tank behind the driver, without engine mounted on the chasis. The cilinder cant be a flashlight, atleast not from this century.
