Williams FW42

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter does not belong here.

Holy geez no wonder they're so slow. You can practically crawl inside that opening in the back. Glad they're finally able to tighten up a bit

Departing from the slow speed topics for a quick question. Does anyone know why FW42 has such a distinctive exhaust note (not implying good/bad/otherwise)?

Last year, standing track side, the FW41 had a sound unlike any of the other cars...a "tinny", almost 1970's 2-stroke motocrosser sort of tune. While I have yet to be track side yet this year, audio seems to convey a similar sound with this car.

Any explanations or guesses?

Hughes says Robert used Russell's floor and FW during FP1 and FP2, Williams switched it back again on saturday. Team pretty much confirmed Robert's observations, hopefully drivers will get new floors for Spain.

Huh? How does that equate to the lack of pace?

Well surely the drag from that gigantic opening doesn't help aero at all

Obviously. However, I'm fairly certain it is not the cause for any issue they might have; They still were quite a lot slower than the rest.

To compare;

The open rear end isn't unique in that regard and renders the whole point as the cause of them being slow moot.

Of course. I was just trying to throw some humour in. We all know that their fundamental problems are much deeper but the gigantic opening in the back certainly didnt do any good. besides, from looking at the other rear ends the williams' looked far larger than any of them
