McLaren MCL34

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

i think it has aero purpose also, this picture is from when it was painted in flowvis, easy to see it interacts with pod deflectors, further the shape is basicly a symetric airfoil, will that not increase the velocity of the flow there if they can keep it attached

From the article:
McLaren's new suspension set-up features a reworked upright mounting, featuring a larger extension for the top wishbone to connect to.

Previously, the horn-shaped extension had the wishbone sit on top of it, but this has now been made larger and allows the wishbone to connect to the side.

In doing so, this shortens the overall wishbone length and redefines the manner in which the suspension travels on turn-in.

It appears that McLaren wishes to further reduce the amount of roll in the corners, providing the car with a more stable aerodynamic platform along with a more consistent level of tyre contact.

That's a bit of a weird article, raising the outer pickup points would generally increase roll slightly, not decrease it. And the pivot is still internal to the bracket, not on the side.
Anyway the height change is so small that the amount of roll difference would be negligable - it's camber gain/KPI and/or aero related, not roll resistance.

Also interesting to note is the fact that this was the second front-end solution the team tried this season with no success.

How do you know there was no success? Both ideas could have simply been for data collection so the team know where to move forward with future development. These revised uprights are clearly test items and not meant to be raced.

interesting info, not related to mclaren but about tech. Danish journalist peter nygard, +20 years in the paddock as fotographer, and close to kevin and haas, in an article yesterday mentioned that haas has one rear hydraulic suspension available from ferrari and this weekend it was grosjean, the interesting part, the advantage, it will lower the rear on the straights which yesterday gave grosjean 6-7kmh on magnussen in qual

Didn't we race that in Hungary?

My apologies in that case. I was under impression that it's still in testing.

In Hungary, Seidl said that of the updates they only had a rear wing and diffuser elements. He did not say anything about the suspension.

If you go to where that image is originally from, you can see it on the pushrod clearly.
