Maybe he was using one from earlier in the season for the Suzuka weekend that was still in the pool, not the one taken in Spa?
Then it was very risky.
Not necessarily, if they thought they had enough pace even with the old battery (which they did), it was an smart move... Save a newer one for a race like Mexico is optimal.

I think that Orlen has a small budget for McLaren. Williams received $ 10,000,000 by lobbying his pilot on the team, for McLaren such money is dust.

Well, you're talking about sponsoring the slowest team on the grid. Petrobras also sponsored Williams in the past for less, it doesn't say that much.

Good point there, but from reports I've seen recently, Kubica is keen on doing FP's with a possibility of a 2021 drive. I can't see that happening with McLaren, even for just FP's. It would be great if they can strike a deal with a company like, Chevron, without needing to use their products. But then again, any deal that would make up for the shortfall would be great, not necessarily an oil company.
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Yeah, that's probably why McLaren said they didn't have any place for Kubica. Putting reserve drivers in your car isn't something McLaren will do for money, instead of teams like Haas and Williams.

Lukoil has a lot of money, they can afford it. In Russia, they sponsor racing teams.

Do you have any idea about their advancement in fuel & lubricants? Since fuel nowadays can win or lose you valuable tenths, I’d figure it’s important to choose the right partner in this area. Said, they will actually use their products instead of BP/Castrol.

I'm sure McLaren won't make the same mistake again. Anyway it's good to hear that they probably already got some other company in place, could be the reason why they terminated the contract with Petrobras.

Under the brands Lukoil, Genesis and EKTO, a full range of fuels and lubricants is produced. The company itself is not limited to oil production and its refining; they are also actively working in the chemical and energy industries. I think if Lukoil decided on such a step, then they perfectly understand the level of responsibility that falls on them.

Return of the Rocket Red? (I know it isn't officially Rocket Red!) Lukoil is always red and white in their Livery. Would be bada** to see Leopard Natural drinks get involved and have a livery like the Leopard Racing Audi RS3 LMS livery!!

If and only if Lukoil becomes Mclaren's title sponsor, but chances of that are slim in my opinion
