Max' overtake nominated for FIA Action of the Year

Published on 28 November 2019

Max Verstappen has been nominated for the FIA Action of the Year-award with his overtake during the edge-of-the-seat battle with Charles Leclerc at Silverstone, during the British Grand Prix last July.

Max is by now a three-time winner of the best action of the year prize.
The Dutchman received the award in 2014 for his superb passing of Antonio Giovinazzi at the Formula 3-race on Imola.
In 2015 he was once again recipient of the prize for his bold overtaking of Felipe Nasr on the outside of Blanchimont (Spa-Belgium).
He also took the prize home in 2016 because of his overtake action on Nico Rosberg in Turn three during the infamous rain race in Brazil.

This time round, the overtake on the Ferrari-driver has been nominated. The crowd is able to vote on one of the nominations from different FIA-categories. Max represents the category Formula 1. By voting you are able to win a trip to an FIA-event of your choice.

verstappen did his best lap on his 3rd attempt on same set of tires in fp2 without a single green sector, but combined it was still his pb. Imo he can take the fight to ferraris, but merc might be out of reach.

It's a good result today. The Mercs have the best chasis by far. Like happened in Barcelona, that last sector smashed everyone. But we've a chance still tomorrow. And better than Ferrari at least

Last year 0.8 sec of from pole. Now 0.36. Great thanks to Honda!
maybe Verstappen has upped his game a bit as well though. He used to be pretty hopeless against Ricciardo (who was only 6 tenths behind last year) here

0.15 behind. This was one of 3 tracks (during the whole of last year) where Ricciardo was faster by a discernable margin. Still .15 is acceptable. Max might have improved further, car more to his liking, who knows.

yeah, he has lost all three Qualifying matchups against Ricciardo in Abu Dhabi though, so there was room for improvement so far, is more what I meant to say.

Ricciardo has an 8-0 record against his team mates now on this track though, so it may have been more of a strength of him than a weakness of Verstappen.

Agreed, and you have a valid point, maybe I should have stressed that. And here again, Ric is quick here, that is for sure.

In fact, member CFS230 made a number crunch and expected Max by the trend to be 0,2 behind here. 0,02% which equates to 2 tenths and he was a bit more. Otoh they didn’t get the car completely perfect and a trendline does offcourse not mean every track is the same, merc is strong here so the result, especially that first run, was solid imho. Enough to beat the Ferrari’s and that took Some doing imho.

Hope they can indeed find more in the car next year.

Mercedes and Ferrari should be worried, next year the Honda engine will again take a step up, and it is now very close in terms of power and efficiency to the Mercedes. If the Red Bull puts a little more peak downforce on the car, and the engine improves they'll be right up there.

Like I said in the race thread, the Merc has a bit more acceleration between 230 and 300kph, it is better in the chicanes and high speed corners. Red Bull is better in slow corners and under braking.

I think the difference is the RB15 has less peak downforce but it comes on sooner than the Mercedes, which has higher peak downforce, and probably better mechanical suspension. It can deal with curbs and bumps a little better. The RB15 is better on brakes because it sheds less downforce at low speeds.

Probably Rake plays a role? The slower you go the higher the angle of attack will become and the more DF you retain.

What gives me hope is they were in trouble the first 1/3rd of the season, they say to have learned from that for next year. Plus they now know what power they will have.

Please for once let Max have a fighting chance. Not even asking for a 1,5 sec advantage.

Perhaps the bargeboard AOA is also quite sensitive to rake. The bargeboards are working in ground effect essentially being so close to the tea tray.
