Scuderia Ferrari SF91?? Speculation Thread

Italian blogger Leo Turrini, who is famously very close to proceedings at Scuderia Ferrari, answered another set of fan questions on his blog in his newest blog entry, as he continued to discuss several aspects surrounding the Maranello team. This time Leo Turrini revealed the Maranello team’s first impressions regarding the car for the 2020 Formula One season:

“To me it appears that so far the simulator and the wind tunnel indications for the 2020 Ferrari car have not impressed the engineers/technicians in Maranello. But keep in mind that there is still time. I am not resigned for next season and I have no interest in pretending to be pessimistic. At the end of 2019 Mercedes had an advantage, especially in the race setup, which was not little. Since the rules do not change, the prediction is mandatory. But let’s see what happens.” – Leo Turrini wrote in his www.quotidiano.net recent post.

I get the impression that at this level of competition, something small can unlock huge gains. It could be a new aero component the size of a matchbook, or a simple change to basic settings (camber,toe,etc.).

Its understanding the problem that is difficult, resolving it in an engineering fashion is kind of easy after that.

According to insider reports, Sebastian Vettel's new Ferrari could have a problem. All details.

Sebastian Vettel's problems seem to continue. AUTO BILD MOTORSPORT learned from reliable sources within Ferrari: The new car with the code name 671, which will be presented on February 11, has allegedly caused head shaking among the engineers in the wind tunnel.

Already a week ago an Italian journalist reported about corresponding problems. As ABMS has now confirmed, the data is actually supposed to be worse than expected. According to the report, the car could even have a serious aerodynamic problem for this Formula 1 season, which neither the simulation specialists nor the wind tunnel engineers have been able to detect so far.

It is quite possible that Ferrari wants to design the car's angle of attack according to the Red Bull model. "Using a steep angle of attack on current cars helps you in several areas," explains ex-Jordan designer Gary Anderson. "But if there's just one little thing wrong, there's a chain reaction from the front spoiler, which may be flowing in the wrong direction. Then you have a serious problem that's not easy to solve." A brand-new Ferrari simulator could help, but it won't be fully operational until spring.

But: Ferrari also has to worry in the drive sector. The reason: At the urging of Red Bull and Mercedes, the FIA automobile authority has already painted gray areas in the area of gasoline flow rate and oil injection black by the end of 2019. It was precisely in these areas that Ferrari was accused by the competition of having interpreted the regulations in a correspondingly bold manner.

"We are very pleased with the clarifications that have come. Everyone can benefit from this", Red Bull team boss Christian Horner therefore expresses his satisfaction.

One thing is certain: It won't be easy for Sebastian Vettel to finally realise his dream and win the title with Ferrari. The pre-season test drives in February in Barcelona (from 19 February) will provide the first information as to whether Ferrari was able to react in time to the problems in the wind tunnel.

This time the new Ferrari will not be unveiled at the Maranello factory, but at the historic Romolo Valli Theatre in Reggio Emilia. This is where the Italian Tricolore was born 223 years ago. At 18.30 the new red goddess will be presented. Fans can watch on Ferrari's social media channels.

The same guy that told me about the pinched wings last year.... He is saying that they could go back the the old chassis if this problem extends beyond a certain time.
So they could run the sf90 car abudahbi spec, which would actually be very fast mind you, in testing then change to the new Chassis come Barcelona GP.
The rules are the same so the old car still has potential. The only problem is that the weakness would still be in its blood but it would be faster than the new cars up to a point.

That's competitive suicide, they're not doing that.

The logic conclusion would be: depression. But as Ferrari has always great hopes for the new season and it ends being a disappointment, maybe this time is the opposite.

I'm skeptical, so it's quite possible for me that the Ferrari problems are real. If we assume that the Mercedes race pace was higher than ~0.5s, and if the teams can improve during the winter with stable regulation, let's say by 0.3s, then the Ferrari should improve by 0.8s. These 0.8s will only allow them to be on par with the Mercedes, but they need to outperform, not equalize.

For the Italians to be able to bluff before the winter tests, without seeing the pace of their opponents, they must find a stable 1.0 - 1.5 seconds on their simulations. Who believes in that? :(

At this point they've gone from cfd to 60% model, a few times round and round, designing as they go, so how can it have gone terminally wrong?

It's not as if it's not correlated to the track

Assuming the worse and they are forced to start with last year's car, would that have to go to crash tests again? or is that certification carried over with the chassis?

I refuse to believe that they will start with last years car.

The new car would have to be a total dog for them to reuse last year's car. Assuming that the other teams have found 0.5s over the winter, Ferrari would be fighting with McLaren for the lesser places.

I very much doubt reports like this would be sandbagging. Teams won't pay much attention to what everyone else is doing at this point.

If there was one thing I've learned over the years is to trust very little in any winter theories and speculations. They worth what they worth, to keep people talking about F1 during the break period (which is good in its own sense but gives little to no insights on what is really happening).

Ferrari will run a Aspec in winter testing first week, then a Bspec aero pack in the second week: like Mercedes last year.
