Mercedes Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Easy to blame Mercedes when AMG and the Pink W10 have had 0 issues.
Mercedes team zero engine problems?

The engine on Bottas' car was changed in first test week. Don't know about pink W10, though. It's either bad coincidence for Williams or they're doing something different with the engine.
That was 1 electrical issue. Williams must be doing something wrong, perhaps on the amount of cooling or airflow of radiators because it is constantly them while the W11 keeps clocking the laps.

It might be that Williams is running it not enough cooled or something else...
But Cowell mentioned power unit hickups during the winter, so not entirely sure if it's only Williams...
Bottas did have issues as well last week.

Friday they will go for performance runs, Allison said, so could be interesting to see if the PU keeps it together.

Dave Robson from Williams told that: "Unfortunately, the morning was cut short by a PU oil system issue, requiring us to fit another new PU ready for George’s running in the afternoon."

I am not an expert but how could that be Williams' fault? Only if there was an oil leak on cooling systems, but they do not mention it.

Indeed, Bottas' problem was an oil leak.

Which may have come from the cooling or storage part, not the Merc part (It may of course been from the Merc part, but just saying)

Yes, fair comment. Though needing an engine change points to something in the power unit, to some extent.

Maybe Williams is running the engine in higher modes to get better times...something that both Mercedes and RP won't do to hide some speed from their closest rivals!

They are in a completely different situation compared to Mercedes and RP so it wouldn't come to me as a surprise if they are running higher engine modes! Also this way Mercedes itself can get useful information about engine reliability!

An oil leak...could that have anything to do with radiator size and engine cooling??

Wrestling number 1 powerunit status from Ferrari has pushed Mercedes to take lots of risks with their pu and the result of that is lot of reliability issues.devouring 3 pu with just one team is a lot they need to get on top of it because they are bound to be overtaken by Honda.

Again merc troubles? Bottas again this time :|

Read this on Twitter:
Valterri replied engine problems, yeah...
But after a short look the engine cover was put on again about 10 minutes before the end of the session, but valterri stepped out because the then already started to change it for lewis so no big concern it seems

Lewis hasn't come out yet, that means an engine change, I'm afraid. (2-3 hours, started at 1pm).
So should be out at 3 or 4pm; I'm officially worried now about merc's engine reliability!

Edit: Now Hamilton's (new?) engine has broken down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Hamiltons engine was new then that is serious cause for concern for Merc.

How many engines now across all the teams - 5/6?

Tbh it depends what is breaking. Sometimes in testing it's a bunch of pipes and connections that can easily be strengthened more. If its a fundamental issue then maybe they will have problems.

Question is did Hamilton got a new engine, or was it just the same one from this morning. If indeed it was a new one, it is a concern for Merc.

The engine just shut down without going up in smoke. Usually this is triggered by sensors to protect it.
Sometimes this happens by accident. Just my two cents on it..
