I hope the organisers had public liability insurance or they might get a class action.

Class action? Who else was injured??

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Well, sued for injury, Im sure there are alot lawyers waiting to do so on his behalf.
These cycling events are always a fiasco of people running onto the road, kids throwing out furniture nails, urine filled balloons being thrown, to have trucks in the mix is just so irresponsible.

He might lose both eyes, specialists will evaluate the eye damage in the coming days ... they will keep him in an induced coma for now (until next week)

Yes, I read that too.

The 44-year-old driver, whose truck Zanardi collided with, reported that he lost control of his handbike and
overturned twice before the collision. He could not have prevented the collision.
Zanardi is at risk of losing both eyes, said Sabino Scolletta, head of the intensive care unit.
Cardiovascular functions are satisfactory.

Cardiovascular functions are not the problem. This could turn out to be very similar brain injuries to Michael and Jules.

If I recall correctly, I read that he was able to talk when help approached at the scene, so I assume the coma is induced to keep him stabilized?

Things is, brain injuries develop over the hours and days afterwards as swelling and possibly bleeding occur.

He is in an induced coma at the moment, that is the gold standard to allow the brain to heal. Truth will be when they try to wake him up from the coma.

Really hope he pulls through.

When they assisted him at the scene he was in a state of shock, screaming and moving the arms in an uncoordinated way. So, yes currently he is in an induced coma, but his score on the coma scale was already quite low right after the incident.

This +1

I've had patients that were holding a lucid conversation with me when I arrived to assist them that have deteriorated rapidly over the subsequent hour or so and sadly never woken up.

I've also had patients with similar mechanisms of injury that were completely unresponsive, that we were convinced were going to die and then have survived to make a full recovery.

Head injuries are so unpredictable and, from a professional perspective, that's what makes them very scary!!

They're very scary from a public perspective too! :(

Alex Zanardi has undergone a second round of neurological surgery .

In a new bulletin issued on Monday by Siena University Hospital, it was confirmed that Zanardi had undergone a second surgery after a CT scan presented “an evolution in the patient’s state which made is necessary to have a second neurosurgical intervention”.

The surgery lasted two-and-a-half hours, after which Zanardi returned to the hospital’s intensive care unit where he remains in a coma.

The hospital reported that Zanardi’s condition “remained stable from the cardio-respiratory and metabolic point of view, serious from the neurological point of view”

“The intervention carried out represents a step that had been anticipated by the team,” according to the university’s health director, Roberto Gusinu. “Our professionals will evaluate day by day the evolution of the situation.

“In agreement with the family, the next bulletin will be issued in about 24 hours.”
