Poor Alex. I'm starting to get a feeling he isn't going to pull through this. I hope I'm wrong.

We thought he was dead the first time. The man is a superhero, if anyone can pull thru it's him. But even if he doesn't he has lived an extraordinary life thus far.

Let's hope for the best, at least it will give his doctors, him and his family some clarity onto how to proceed.

Zanardi transferred to specialist facility to continue recovery

Last week the hospital confirmed that they were easing his sedation and on Tuesday announced that he has been transferred to another facility to continue his rehabilitation.

“Our professionals remain at the disposal of this extraordinary person and his family for further stages of clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic development,” said the hospital’s General Manager Valtere Gioviannini.

“I sincerely thank the multidisciplinary team that took care of Zanardi by putting in place a great professionalism, recognised nationally and beyond.

“The athlete spent over a month in our hospital: he underwent three delicate surgical operations and showed a path of stability of his clinical conditions and vital parameters that allowed the reduction and suspension of sedation, and the consequent possibility of be able to be transferred to a facility for the necessary neuro-rehabilitation.

“I conclude by sending a big hug to Alex’s family, who have shown extraordinary strength: a precious gift that must be a fundamental travel companion of the new path that begins today.”

Yesterday Alex his son:

"My father will make it, that's for sure. He will make it this time too. And one day he will talk about it. With me and my children. I have faith in it and so does my mother," said son Niccolò Zanardi Wednesday .
"There are encouraging signs. He's recovering much faster than the doctors expected. But it should come as no surprise: that's my dad. The man's energy is incredible. His strength is extraordinary."
"He is not yet conscious and it is still unclear whether he will regain his eyesight. But what really matters is knowing whether we can communicate with him. We are going a long way, but finally it is going uphill," says Niccolò Zanardi.
Pastor Luca Poli visited Zanardi today.

"Alex Zanardi has only been conscious for a short time and gets tired quickly."
“Sometimes he's awake, sometimes he's not. He was very tired when he was transferred from Siena to here. I was able to see him for a moment. I have not been able to take his hand, because we have to keep our distance from the patients in these times. ”

Zanardi had been staying in a rehabilitation clinic for a few days, but his situation became unstable and he had to be moved to the San Raffaele hospital in Milan.

"Given the instability of Zanardi's medical condition and after consultation with Dr Franco Molteni of the Rehabilitation Villa Beretta, the transfer of the athlete was ordered. At the Intensive Care of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, he received adequate treatment. For now, no further information will be released", the hospital's statement declares.

It's not really looking any better than it was several weeks ago. But the story isn't over yet.

He can still come out of this, I think.

Google translated:
Alex Zanardi's first night at the San Raffaele in Milan passed without shaking. The institute said that the diagnostic updates to frame its conditions continue, that the therapeutic plan has been implemented to stabilize its situation and that the Paralympic champion is responding well to the first treatments and will be subjected to an MRI in the next few hours. The clinical picture at the moment however remains unstable.

Bacterial infection—

Zanardi arrived at the hospital in Milan on Friday at 3.40 pm by ambulance from Villa Beretta in Costa Masnaga, where he had arrived on Tuesday from Siena to begin a slow rehabilitation journey. The transfer was imposed by a bacterial infection that occurred between Thursday and Friday that led to fever, and other complications. Zanardi yesterday was immediately visited by Dr. Luigi Beretta, chief of Neurosurgical Intensive Care at San Raffaele. Other teams from the hospital have already contributed to the stabilization of the conditions of the former Formula 1 driver. The night in the ward passed in a serene way, obviously compatible with the conditions of a patient with a very complex clinical picture. Next to the champion is his wife Daniela. No official updating bulletins are scheduled during the day.

Alessandro Alex Zanardi underwent another surgery, this time in the San Raffaele hospital, after he shifted last week due to unstable health.

Having being transferred to Villa Beretta rehab center from Le Scotte Hospital – where he was since June 19 – the health condition of Zanardi deteriorated, which forced the doctors to shift him back in a hospital but this time he went to San Raffaele in Milan in Italy.

The former F1/IndyCar racer was shifted on Friday and already on Saturday, Zanardi underwent his fourth surgery, which was termed as a ‘delicate neurosurgical procedure for the treatment of some late complications due to primary head injury’.

Zanardi is stable now after few days of being operated but his condition remains serious as he is yet to regain conscious since the incident, where he had collided head-on with a truck during a handbike event, in response to COVID-19 pandemic re-opening.

He had three prior surgeries when he was admitted in the Le Scotte Hospital, where two was the same neurosurgical procedure as he was kept sedated in all his stay, while the final one was the re-structure of the damages he had following the incident.

The note from the hospital stated: “Regarding the clinical conditions of Alex Zanardi, the San Raffaele Hospital communicates that the day after the transfer to the Neurosurgical Intensive Therapy, directed by Professor Luigi Beretta, the patient underwent a delicate neurosurgical procedure performed by Professor Pietro Mortini, director of the Operative Unit of Neurosurgery, for the treatment of some late complications due to primary head injury.

“At the moment, the clinical and radiological tests confirm the success of the aforementioned treatments and the current clinical conditions of the patient, still hospitalized in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, appear stable.”

I was very much under the impression his coma was induced.

What I’ve read that was the case, but that they stopped the sedation about a week ago and he still hasn’t regained consciousness yet.

Has anyone seen an update to his condition? Information seems to have dried up several weeks ago.
