FIA wants to ban qualifying modes in 2021

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Looking on the bright side, maybe once the teams are denied quali mode they might reveal a bit of what they’ve been doing in the past. I won’t hold my breath.

Drivers don't need modes to protect an engine, they just shouldn't mash the pedal all the time, they need to modulate their pedal inputs with their feet, like microsteering.
I think you lack understanding about what all the engine modes are actually doing. A lot more is being changed that what the driver can do with a pedal!
You think wrong. You don't seem to understand my comment so I'll leave it at that. Valteri sounds like a dummy if he says he doesn't have the power, skill, knowledge, or means to protect the tires or engine.

How can they make a rule change in season? wont that require unanimous support from every team?
Or are the rules changed?

I think they will claim it’s a clarification of two existing rules. Entirely in their, the FIA, Control.

Dans79 is absolutely right. I read your comment the same way. You pretty explicitly state that the driver can just let his foot off the throttle a bit and manage the engine that way.

That’s not how this works in F1.

Letting off the throttle in an F1 car has a significant (monumental) engine braking effect. It’s not like modulating the pedal in a road car on the highway where you go “Hmm, take a bit off here to go 65 mph instead of 70.”

They have to be careful though, this isn't purely a sporting issue. This has hardware ramifications that could require the small poor teams to have to dish out extra money for reliability reasons. That's the kind of thing that leads to lawsuits.

I think the expense will lie with the engine suppliers, developing the modes and providing lifetime guidance on their use.

I can’t think of any direct hardware consequences. What do you think they might be?

Well. Just run quali mode and a three step throttle pedal where you just are pushing through two spring step so the first step is normal full throttle. Second pushed through is overtake and the third is partymode.
Illegal. There can’t be any driver identifiable positions in the pedal travel
Can there be something like 4 angle throttle paddle work ? Downward, upward, right and left. Some kind of das with throttle paddle :P

In the event of a lawsuit the FIA could site past practice. In fact late in 2019 we saw this very thing with a clarification of the rules regarding fuel flow and the subsequent neutering of Ferrari PUs.

All the FIA has to say is sorry your PU manufacturer was not complying with the regulations as we intended.

I don't really like where this is going, but I dont think anyone would have a credible legal challenge against the FIA in this case.

If i was an engine manufacture I would for sure have a clause in my contracts that makes sure I'm not not responsible for any potential liability issue caused by my clients using my product differently because of mid season rule changes/clarifications.

I'm sure we are going to see more failures now because people will be trying to use higher power modes during the race for more laps than are advisable to work around the rule.

It's not one supplier, it's all of them.

Not to mention has the FIA been asleep at the wheel, teams/suppliers have been using special modes for qualifying since the beginning of the hybrid era.

Has anyone see a copy of the letter? I'm not talking random cherry picked quotes, I mean a full word for word copy? The original PDF version would be nice!

FIA were asleep at the wheel with Ferrari's fuel flow trick for at least most of 2019. I suspect it was in play during at least part of 2018 too. So all they have to do is say new info has come to light.

It doesnt matter how many manufacturers it affects, that doesnt change the FIA's ability to issue a clarification. Again, I think it's a pretty stupid move and won't really make a difference, but the FIA are very unlikely to get in any legal troubles over this.

I would add the FIA won't be forcing teams to run the PU in a more aggressive mode, that will be the teams own doing.
