Lando was literally on the same set of tires for pretty much the whole of FP1. He couldn't even beat Carlos's time which he set on a dirty track early on the session on the medium tires. Don't take much in terms of pace from this session. It's bad that they lost track time with Carlos though as Andreas said they were planning to do some back-to-back comparisons with both cars. They will have to postpone that program to FP2 now.

Lando near the end of the speed trap rankings too:

P4 & 5 after everyone did Their quali sim... That’s a solid result.

But not sure what to make of the Old nose beating the new nose by 1/10th

I guess it’s not bad, maybe the new nose is more about consistency than outright pace 🤞

It's probably more about the bargeboards and floor being optimised for the old nose. The nose is the first part of an overall upgrade package that they are currently accessing. If they are seeing the nose is corelating to wind tunnel data then they can commit to producing the other parts.

Perhaps, but the team were hoping to keep it on the car for the weekend if the data matched their expectations so it must work with the current package

I guess the decision will come down to more than a 1 lap run, but from data analysis over both sessions with driver error taken into account. The good news is it’s probably no worst than the old nose in terms of pace

I'm not sure why you guys take McLaren's FP1 laptimes so seriously.

It's known that McLaren don't focus on pace whatsoever in that session.

The nose change is more about next year, the work is to claw back and make it work with this years stuff sufficiently well that it's not a downgrade, not to suddenly find 3 tenths by bolting it on.

Exactly. The nose needs to be homologated by Wednesday I believe, so they need to make sure the gathered data is as solid as possible. Looks like it's working well with the existing package, but the key point is it opens up greater potential for future development.
