The fact that SAI was closing in on NOR times so quickly during quali tells me that the package quite clearly is poorly understood and a lot of time can be found. max speed trap figures “look” encouraging too. I reckon there is a good chunk of time to find still.

Problem is the updates couldn’t have come at a worse time. New circuits and variable weather. Easy to draw the wrong conclusions or infer things that may not be true. It may well be a bit like RIC had to do with the Renault and get adventurous in setting up the car to unlock potential. If they can make a similar jump like Renault has coming off corners then there is a good gain to be unlocked. But it’s all too soon to call
I have a similar feeling... It is too early to evaluate positive or negatively the updates... Sochi was a rough race, Lando suffered some damage that showed as steering issues and restarted the race from the back... And today was hard for the time to dial the new updates with only a very short session in which getting the drivers used to the track layout was key part of the program.

Wouldn't make a difference, this isn't a power track. It's their chassis getting them around there that fast.

There might be a repeat of Mugello. Good qualifying position and getting eaten after 10 laps. We will see.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

I agree, to me the Ferrari car is only fast in QUALY under certain conditions, but I worry that now we are behind Renault in both race & qualy pace

Ferrari have quite a significant upgrade to their bargeboards there so this turn of pace may continue as the season progresses with only the power sensitive tracks bringing them back into the clutches of the midfield
Just a fan's point of view

On another note Ferrari has done something to improve that much.

Yes Ferrari did something smart and very profitable, signing someone called Charles Lecrerc :P

Q2 result:
p5 Lecrerc 1:26.240
p11 Vettel 1:26.738 (+0.498)

Keep in mind Vettel is a 4 times WDC and was considered for some time as one of the big three talents in F1, and specially an awesome driver on saturdays as he was almost unbeateable on qualifying.

Now he look like an average driver at most when compared to Lecrerc. Vettel is still Vettel (not as good as some did assume some years back, but neither an average driver, he´s very good), but IMHO it´s obvious Lecrerc is something really really special who can put a poor Ferrari in 4th, partially thanks to one of the tightest midfields in many years so a special driver can climb many positions with just 1-2 tenths improvement

I think Renault is using PU mode tricks. There is no other explanation for this gap.
We all support McLaren here, but do you honestly believe that the only way Renault can beat them is by cheating? You don't think it's possible that Renault with all the money and resources at their disposal actually produced a decent car?

Yeah that's just rubbish. Renault apparently have infrastructure (Wind Tunnel+CFD+Manufacturing+digital framework+simulator) almost on par with Merc and RBR now with more to come according to Pat Fry. Additionally they have got on top of the slim nose concept and Pat Fry made his name as a suspension genius, it would be unreasonable to expect anything other than them making big gains. Luckily McLaren have gains of their own to come via their own adoption of the nose concept and the new Merc engine (with another good step in power rumoured next year). As understanding of the new nose increases gains will follow.

So today we might lose that 3rd position from Renault unless we find a trick.

Don't start looking for tricks, that is where Mclaren went astray a couple years back.
There are no tricks,it is all work (and some luck, which I will gladly take  )

They were there or thereabouts in sector 1 and 2. But lost a full tenth to Renault in sector 3. In high-speed corners McLaren are doing really well right now. Just look at the onboards and compare it to Renault. The car is much more stable and smoother. But on medium speed and especially slow speed corners, this car suffers. I don't know whether they suffer for turn-in or for traction on those types of corners. But either way, the Renault is handling those types of corners much better than this car.

Lightning strikes both Renaults at the start of the race.
