 I wonder if Botas has asked if he can drive that car?

Mercedes have officially held talks with Williams and they are open to lending him.

I'd be open to it in their position if the engine discount was big enough!

Bingo!

On a side note, for our rules aficionados, if Russell does fill in for Hamilton, and let’s say he scores a podium, how will points be awarded?

Will Merc receive WCC points, and will Russell get WDC points?

Hopefully one of our rules aces here can help.

I thought the amount the engine manufacturers were allowed to charge customers was a maximum of $12m or so. I remember Toto saying that even if Merc waived the $12m it wasn’t enough to have much leverage over customer teams regarding driver choices. The Merc board isn’t interested in releasing cash to buy seats for Merc junior drivers. That’s why there isn’t a Mercedes junior driver program currently.

Yes Mercedes will receive WCC points as it is their car running and yes Russel will receive personal WDC points as he is the one who is driving the car

There does not need to be any engine discount at all. A team like Williams don't want a young driver to lose their only chance for a podium in a year.

Russell would also have to use Hamilton's engine/power unit allocation while whoever fills in for him gets his.

Seriously??? You think a team would just give away a driver to get a podium for another team without any financial recompense?!!!?

The way I see it right now is its gonna be Russell. This will be a 2022 shootout. I also see that Jack Aitken is favourite to get his shot in Williams, probably racing Fittapaldi, Latifi and possibly Giovinazzi.

Williams will see either free or a heavy discount for the two races.

Stoffel will be there for emergencies id guess. All that means is who will Campos get for F2, I suppose someone with some hard cash will take that seat.

Again, i doubt Stoffel will even really be concidered. They'll have him race the Formula E race in Valencia.
Meanwhile, Russell's deal will be fixed quite swiftly and again, Nissany just tested with the Williams car a week ago, presumably is still there,
and if not is back quickly being their reserve driver anyway and not occupied in another occupation this weekend so the most logical and available solution.

We'd thus be likely looking at it like this:

Russell @ Mercedes
Fittipaldi @ Haas
Nissany @ Williams

Biggest chance yet for Max to get a win.
Great opportunity for Russell to shine (he's a qually beast so that's a good start), and beat Bottas.

while also sending off 4 Hamilton players to make it more interesting"

I'm starting to warm to the thought of George and Max battling it out for the win. How much fun would that be? =D>

Of course, the reality is that George will probably be asked to help Bottas secure 2nd in the drivers' title. Bottas is 12 points ahead of Max, I think, so needs to place adjacent to him in both races with one of those being ahead.

They (Williams) could make some cash by 'allowing' Nissany to drive, if he or his sponsor coughs up for it?
That and the experience for Russel would probably make it worth while for them as Russel will not only get lots of TV time for their sponsors, but will be worth more to them in the future (PR)

If It keeps the driver happy, and potentially happy enough to stick around for another year (or maybe even 2) while he waits for a top seat to open up, then they would fore sure do it. At this point Williams needs George way more than he needs them!

Nissany doesn’t have a superlicence.
