Good riddance. What would one miss if there is no voting? People have abused downvoting to vent their hate and dislike. It should be done on all threads.

I forget the exact details, but accounts get the ability to vote at something like 40 points. If you don't already have it, you should get it soon.

From the FAQ:
"The rating system was introduced to highlight valuable content; posts that matter to readers. Content that is valuable to others, factually correct or interesting is worth it to be rated."

And as we're trying to focus on technical things, disabling rating in the silly season topic is long overdue. The misuse of the system in this topic was such that all votes were removed.

There even seems to be a few posters who collect down votes.

lol, yeah the silly season topic is not really ideal for ratings. It’s too easy to be subjective.

You can start up voting as soon as you have just one up vote. To downvote, you should get 25 up votes. Anyway, my opinion doesn't change that the voting system is totally meaningless for whatever it was intended for.

The intentions were good, and when used properly, we could use the data to promote the best posts out there.

However, it's not really used as it should. We see way too many "agreement votes", and it's difficult to check every single one of them. But, to sort it out, we're not ruling out any possible measure, including chances that other threads could similarly get cleared of votes.

The voting system has some value.

While it's common to see people with a couple of hundred positive points and think "Omg how did this happen", I can't think of any example of a user who has 20 or so negative votes, or a nagative balance in their profile and think "they have been hard done by there"

So I think it accurately flags trolls.

Would it be very difficult to give the options of agree- disagree- recommend to posts?

There are many posts which I think are very interesting an would sugest others read for their own value, but there are also posts that just agree or disagree with my personal preference or thinking.

If it does not get a recommended, the 'score' stays low and downvotes are irrelevant.

( I have never given a down vote and dont know where it would be used, except maybe if a personal insult was involved? )
