Mercedes AMG F1 W12 - Speculation Thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Correct. And this was tested in the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi.
I don't remember seeing a bulker engine cover in Abu Dhabi practice, to house the larger plenum?
I was referring to the testing of various new cooling architecture components for the 2021 season, which was reported on by multiple sources, including @SomersF1. Believe the testing began at Sakhir and carried on through the post-season test:

"Meanwhile, it’s believed the team also installed the experimental radiator layout that was briefly tested on Valtteri Bottas’ car at the Sakhir GP, owing to the same rear bodywork and cooling outlet being selected as was used in that test. It’s understood that this new layout was designed to work in conjunction with next year's power unit . . .

. . . Therefore, to maintain reliability, the team was likely forced to run in a lower power setting than would ordinarily be the case. This was perhaps underlined by the Mercedes pair being the slowest in the top speed trap during the race."

Yes, I think that must be the bigger plenum. Also heard they had to move bits around to make room and the fuel pump has now moved towards the back of the engine.

I've had this confirmed by ex Merc engineer as well as current integration engineer for one of the customers.

Where was their fuel pump placed? similar to Renault and Honda?

On the valve cover towards the front, presumably driven by the inlet camshaft. Same as Renault and Honda. I can't remember seing where Ferrari have theirs.

It looks to me like it's on the driver's side-impact head protection.
