Apparently Button did a full race distance and Qualifying simulation today, so the 1:19.1 was probably on low fuel and fresh tyres, not trying to detract from the great time set by the Brawn - I'm really hoping they do well this year.

I love a good underdog story...

This is going to be well worth the early time in the US to watch the Melbourne GP live!

That wouldn't be a huge surprise...
Actually, now would be the time to add - wouldn't it be the "skate-fin" that has to be removed? The FIA had no problems with the sharkfin for a whole year, after all... And it's not in the way of the driver's removal - while the skate-fin is.
Yes, you're right skate, not shark. Also saw somewhere that buttons time was early in a stint of seven so not on fumes by any means

Are you talking about those plates on the side of the driver's head?

The quote by myself from this http://www.f1technical.net/development/227.
jddh1 wrote:I don't like this solution because these plates are just too close to the driver's head. I also think it will be obstructing the marshals in case they need to pull a driver out fast. If they push them back about 25 cm (if it's allowed to go that far back), I have no problem with them.
I knew it!

Wouldn't that be late-night in the US? It's early hours in Europe...

2 am

but for euro races we are used to the 8am start. So early hours is all relative I guess.

Now the nit-picking process begins...

Does anyone really believe that Williams would have put these on if it was a safety hazard?

Doesn't anyone think that this was already considered? Planned for? Engineered around?

I love it when cry-baby know nothings arbitrarily and subjectively ban items that cause people to cry.

Maybe they should have listened when everyone complained about the stupid rear wings...

Why even bother anymore? I would like to know the exact cost of these items to the Williams team, and if the FIA are willing to reimburse them for the banning of a technology that has not even been tested by them outside of a photograph, and is completely legal by the technical regulations.

When THINK is interchangable with FACT, then we have a problem...

It's a part located directly around the cockpit. Won't you agree that this area has to be as easily accessible as possible in the event of an accident?

Teams develop soon-banned technology and parts all the time. Developing such a radically-placed part is always a risk.

If a driver suffers a neck injure, you cannot slide the brace in there with those fins. Now, I might not know a lot about engines and stuff, but I do know a few things about head and neck injuries.

It depends what they are connected to. If they are connected to the removable section around the cockpit that part has to be removed anyway to get the driver out. If they are connected to the bodywork outside of the cockpit then I guess they could be in the way.

My guess is, like the BMW "towers", this was more about somebody not liking the look of them and banning them on safety reasons as no-one would think about arguing with safety.

I dont get the problem of those towers, you have to remove the headrest anyway to get the driver out so those fins wont be in the way then

I don't think they are attached there, at the end of the day - if true, Charlie will probably have told them what was allowed in his opinion from a safety erspective so we may still see medded versions...

The thought I had was they could fit quick release buttons to them for the marshalls to take them off...
