I've been banging on about returning to under-body venturi tunnels with simpler wings to improve racing here on F1T for several years, frankly I'm very pleased to see we are almost there!

Complain about "IndyCar" all you like, but the simple fact is, the Lola Champ Cars with their under-body venturi tunnels and simpler wings could race each other hard, even on street circuits without needing gimmicks like DRS (they did have over-boost with a total race time limit).

The only item I'm surprised that wasn't included was the enclosed rear pocket - AIUI, this prevented the ground effect from being lost when eg riding curbs and in other scenarios that caused big ground clearance changes.

I hadn't realised how far off the ground the front wing is. The mock-up car shows a strange downards slope to the front wing from the nose, in reality will the main element of the real front wings immediately curve down rather aggressively much like the Tyrrell 019 -- provided that is permitted?

Teams are already saying there own cars in the wind tunnel don’t look look like that. Wouldn’t surprise me that the teams hoodwinked the FIA rules again.

These new f1 cars still look like f1 cars to me, not indy cars, they are like restyled 2021 cars. They retained the coke bottle shape and the rollhoop intake, while Indycars are more delta-shaped because of their big rear wheel pods and have a hollow roll structure...
The new big tunnels have been integrated to these f1 cars in a very smooth and discrete way. They barely changed the general look of the cars. Even the big 'central downforce generator' (the multiple vanes below the raised tunnels entry) look like classic bargeaboards from afar.
The only thing that resembles indy is the fast drooping nose IMO.

And many parts are rounded and curved in this FOM concept in a way that is reminiscent of the modern Dallara Indycar design, but that's it... and some of these design features wont be followed by the teams IMO, like the fantasy sidpod inlets (blue) and the simplistic and horizontal sidepod cover (pink), which should reinforce teh 'f1 look' and dimnish the indy look.
Not to mention the few other nosecone design possibilities.

I can't see DRS flap. how will mechanism looks like? Actuator I mean. Will it be placed outside (Something that mercedes had in 2011? )

I'm interested to see whether teams' DNA shows through in the new cars. Red Bull, for example, have for a long time had a different approach to the sidepods, particularly the rear slope and how the pod meets the floor. Will they do something similar with the new cars? Will it be beneficial to do so?

The anticipation of the unveiling of the teams' 2022 cars is probably, for me, more exciting than the rest of this season. A new F1 era. Can't wait. Not so worried about the aesthetics so long as the cars are able to do what is intended by the rule change.

I expect an awful lot of work will be going in to designing suspension systems to give the tyres the best chance. How the tyres are used by the various cars could be one of the big differentiators next year, for example, if the aero performance of the cars is similar.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

AFAIK, according to the data that F1 published in 2020 and according to the simulations RacecarEngineering published in april 2020, the drag reduction thanks to tow might decrease compared to today, especially at closer separations, so tow will be less effective, theoretically, and that's one of the reasons DRS was retained.

Interesting. If that's the case, then they'll have to figure a way of fitting a hinge and actuator on that swoopy rear wing. Was kind of hoping DRS was going to become a bygone.

It would, however, be an interesting and ironic application of the Law of Unintended Consequences if the cars could follow in the corners but the tow was less and so they still couldn't make a pass work on track.

My Observations...

1. Aerodynamics going Back to ground effects & very restrictive...

2. Mechanicals going Back to simpler designs & very restrictive..

3. Engines going Forward with eletrification at all costs...

4. Automotive companies influence & self interest too big...

5. Opportunities for innovation getting less & less...


A case of 2 + 2 = 5 for the FIA Again...
