McLaren MCL35M

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

These bargeboards can pass for modern art. I will miss them on next year's cars.

You can really imagine how these things shape the air into multiple points of the car. They never cease to amaze me.
It always amazes me how much effort goes in to dealing with the front tyre wake. Much of that bargeboard is just about pushing the dirty air away from the car and pulling "clean" air down from above the car. The hours of work involved in moving an air stream a couple of feet sideways. =D>
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Update to the rear tyre squirt deflectors to test next GP, change to the rear brake winglets again too, might be more but I don't know details on the others.

Great stuff, there could be some good gains to be found from that area

Have they updated the diffuser at all since the start of the season?

There was a tweak on the outer edges at the start of the season but I don't think anything since. I'm sorta expecting that to happen if they're happy with the new floor vanes and tweaking tyre squirt and rear brake tins though.

That is a fantastic picture. Really shows the intricacies of the floor and bargeboard design and how it all integrates together.

Reasons I can think of:-

1. Easy to replace small parts if area is damaged
2. Quicker to build in parts
3. Cheaper to make small parts
4. Easier to develop individual areas as parts can simply be bolted on

TBH I’m surprised other teams don’t do this… maybe they do but they’re not so obvious. I wouldn’t think there was a weight penalty, Aluminium is very light

It's all titanium reinforcement around the slit areas.

that's a fairly significant addition to the barge boards - correct me if I'm wrong, don't think I've seen that aero piece on any other cars, might need to see it from another angle
