It's amazing how McL created so much volume in the diffuser. Those before and after pics show just how much they must have re-engineered the rear crash structure, and possibly the suspension and transmission. Impressive.

I think most of the crash structure is in the rain light, and it's intact. I think the changes were the result of deciding the upper diffuser was more important than the lower diffuser.

I probably used the wrong word. On the old pic, there is a lot of structure around the rear light construction that must have moved to make room for the new upper diffuser.

Also, the tighter tail of the body work must have caused further complications in the underlying structure.

We won't know unless someone can dig out before and after pics of the car with the body work removed

Looking good in valencia they shortened the wheelbass on lewis's car and a new front wing which they did not use in the race.

Undergone changes from Hungary
1.A modified front wing was tested but not finally used in race
2.Revised front suspension because of the wheelbase reduction , only for Hamilton ‘s car
3.Exhaust outlets remained asymmetric but their size was significantly reduced offering less drag
4.Revised rear wing

CHASSIS USAGE - EUROPEAN GP

Hamilton used the chassis No 5 which was only used in Spain, so this was the second race for this chassis . Kovalainen used chassis No 3 .

KERS EVOLUTION - HUNGARY , EUROPEAN GP

It seems that Mc Laren team has reduced their KERS weight for the (the generator, the electronic brains and the battery storage system) down to 25kg and have been running it since Hungary.
The very first KERS systems had these 3 parts at 100kg, Mclaren had tested last year a system that weighed in at 37kg and it's beleived to have been somewhere around that weight up until recently

REAR WING - EUROPEAN GP

Mc Laren used an old fashioned style rear wing in Valencia , already used during winter testing and last season also . The rear wing’s main profile is slightly raised in its central section while and the big slot in the middle of the front of the main plane was removed .This solution produces not only less downforce, but also much less drag compared to the previous configuration .

FRONT SUSPENSION - EUROPEAN GP , VALENCIA
Image

As Ferrari did in Silverstone, in Valencia McLaren shortened the wheelbase of the MP4-24, moving the front suspension backwards by 75mm in order to have more weight over the front tyres. Only Lewis Hamilton had the revised car and when he touched the wall on Friday there were no spares for the damaged front wing and he was forced to sit out the rest of the session. Team mate Heikki Kovalainen tested new front wing endplates, but in the end these were not used for the race.
from http://www.f1.com
The suspension’s joints to the chassis were modified to cope with the wheelbase reduction taken place change

How can you tell from the picture that this is chassis No5 and not another?

I am not a psycho-magician to read the chassis number from the picture . The picture may shows the chassis No 5 that was used by Hamilton in Spa but the info about the chassis number came from the Mc Laren's site and ESPImperium's data table
