McLaren now knows where Ferrari and Renault went wrong (maybe not with 100℅ certainty). They also know the strengths of the Mercedes engine.

Hence its a safe assumption mclaren and Honda would have learned from the mistakes.

Also remember that Honda will still have all their tokens left at the end of 2015. Which means that even if they think that the engine is a little sub par. They can still change 48℅ of it.

The engine will be bespoke as now the engine team in Japan and chassis team in the UK will be building in unison. So they won't have the same kind of packaging problems as they did this year.
Engine tokens will be the same for everyone, its been made clear Honda won't get any special benefits.

I remember that few months before Mclaren & Honda announced that they will join forces from 2015 there were speculations on the Internet (maybe here on the forum as well but I'm not sure) that there are already a few Honda employees who are working in Woking as a preparation for the new joint project. Taking this with a huge reserve (again those were only speculations), if those rumors were true then it appears that Mclaren & Honda are working on this new engine and chassis for a quite a long time, or longer that was originally thought - and maybe this announcements that we get from various sources for a possible first test of the Mclaren-Honda car to come earlier that originally planned (Jerez 2015) and be ready for late November tests in Abu Dhabi are the result of just that, so as we all know - only time will tell :)

Interviewed by Sky Sports, this are Ron Dennis's impression about the Honda engine: “It is mindblowing, the engine is a piece of jewellery. They are further ahead than expected. The competiveness of the engine is without question.”

Actually that kind of makes sense to me. New engine - test it in a car you are familiar with to give yourself a baseline to work from, then introduce the new car at the second test...
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

It's only October, there's a long way to go before we get to Jerez. This is just a journalist having to fill a page and hoping if they write sensational speculation then it'll generate lots of clicks.

Firstly, several teams choose to miss the first test. RB did that and went onto win the WDC and WCC.

Secondly, the story is saying that McLaren might not run the test car at Abu Dhabi because their current engine contract is with Merc. If that happens, then the next test session will be Jerez, so that might be the only option for the test vehicle.

The story assumes they will not be able to run the test vehicle at another venue. The only reason for a test vehicle is to avoid the rule saying that they can't run an F1 spec car. So if the test vehicle is prohibited they don't need to build one because they can go straight to the real car in Jerez.

IIRC, Arai had earlier said that the first outing of McLaren Honda will be in Jerez in the MP4-30.. If it is indeed the case that Jerez would be the first outing for Mclaren Honda, it would make more sense to use MP4-30, rather than using a test mule (which would be necessary in case they want to run the engine before Jerez).

It would make more sense to test the whole package to understand the teething problems, rather than keep developing the engine in a test car and then find out at the last test or the second to last test that there are problems in integration.

Also, I don't know if Peter Prodromou will have any inputs into the aerodynamics of the car.. But if he does, he may plan it in Newey's style, which will be extreme packaging to get the perfect coke bottle shape. Hence it would make more sense to test the entire package.

McLaren plans to run Honda development F1 car during testing
Having the MP4-29H available also means that there is no pressure on the outfit to get its MP4-30 fully finished early on for engine work.

That means design staff could be given a few more weeks in which to improve aerodynamic development before being committed to building the car.
Perfect for Prodromou.

As the MP4-29H is not intended to enter competition can it be tested through the winter?

That would be 2 months of testing in Japan by Honda with no limitations to iron out all problems before the official winter tests in February.
