Scuderia Ferrari SF71H

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Ferrari and Red Bull have highly similar looking diffusers.

I'm not sure but I think there are changes to the rear brake duct fins aswell?
New:
Here they look kinda different (Seb's car)

but in this photo they are the same as before (Kimi's car)

Old (Monaco):

Seems to be only new on Seb's car. He also got the updated brake duct fin when viewed from the front.

It looks like only Vettel's car has updated wing, brake ducts, floor. Kimi's car only has the updated floor.

And from the looks of it also the updated diffuser. Both have the updated floor and diffuser, but only Vettel has the updated RW and brake ducts.

I'll risk sounding like an arrogant a$$, but why the hell did they make the previous version at all?! Needlessly complicated to manufacture and definitely not as aerodynamically effective as new version. I haven't registered it until now, but man, so weird.

For a few years now it's all "put smallest possible winglets everywhere and make as many slots as you can" and that's a very good method. The only reason I see for older version is less drag (and less downforce for sure) by excluding slots, with a good vortex enhancement on wingtips, but come on, it's such a small piece! :?
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Likely because they’ll be doing back-to-back tests in FP1.

(Reference to updates primarily being on Seb’s car)

I had a similar reaction. :) Simple answer? No one is perfect.

I kept thinking this sort of thought through 2009-2012 or thereabouts, when everyone except Red Bull kept putting walls in front of their beam wings: running wide, short gearboxes; pushrod rear suspension, and bodywork with lots of blockage.

so if all these slots are supposed to add performance, while the positioning, angles and shapes of slats ect. doesn't change, then why not just add slots everywhere? 'cause it seems that every team is doing this.
why not just make the whole car full of slots?

"omg they've added slots! this is great, now they're gonna be 0.01sec faster in that one corner in barcelona"...

I'd say adding slots to things has been a large percentage of aero upgrades for years now. Rear wing endplates, diffusers, bargeboards, and front wing endplates and floors.

Positioning, angles and shape (well, size mostly) of flaps change when you add more slots. Since these flaps need to get smaller with an increase of slots, it's not as easy to have them structurally sound.

Also, adding slots adds drag most of the time (in this case of sideways flow it doesn't, since there is no major longitudinal surface to project increased pressure on) so it has to be done according to track requirements. In my view, teams choose to add them only when they can afford it and when there is no other way to increase aero performance.
And they call it a stall. A STALL!
