Caterham CT-05 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

More so then Red Bull atleast seeing as no other Renault has had the overheating RB sufferd.

Are Caterham running a test livery or will this be the same design they race all season?

I hope this isn't their final design, i want to see some yellow back on the engine cover which looked really good last year with this new colour of green.

there definately won't be any yellow, but there should be a more dark green present and a lime green. just check their GP2 car.

I have not bothered with Caterham until I saw this car. Analyse the challenge; establish the design goal; design to comply with that & take what comes. Just simple elementary first principle engineering design. Nose is bizarre but outstanding - really made me smile. Sidepods are clunky.

This car does not to that colour justice.

Also, will they update the nose so that there isn't such a harsh transition between the "penis" and the bulkhead?

I think they have a lot of guts with that nose-job, and I don't think it is that terrible.
Everybody knows the layout of these noses is artificial and unwanted by most,
so why shoud they hide that if this is what works for them.

All I wonder about is if the underside of the bulkhead does not create lift,
while all we are looking for is downforce?

The implication is that they are still hunting for rear downforce, not front. And yes, it certainly does produce a little bit of lift at the front.

But how much more than the other cars? I mean, doesn't it follow that if all the cars manage to divert the same amount of air downwards to go around the undercut sidepods and to the back, they also generate the same amount of lift?

Genuine question, I have no real experience or knowledge of aerodynamics besides what I read here :)

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️
